Large house for Exmoor holidays

Hot off the press

Huge savings on weeks and breaks at this handsome country house with fascinating horsey history…

Porlock Vale House is a place to enjoy with family and friends – and you save 20% on all available weeks and short breaks until August 2017.

Bring everyone...

You can book the whole house and settle in to enjoy the elegance and space with up to 29 companions, all privately set within 12 acres of grounds in the beautiful Exmoor National Park.

Horsey history...

Porlock Vale House was originally built in 1904 as a hunting lodge, but found fame as a pioneering equestrian training ground. Developed by Tony Collings, a founder of the Horse of the Year Show and Badminton Horse Trials, it held Britain’s first dressage course, built one of the first indoor schools, supplied horses for the modern pentathlon of the 1948 Olympics and trained the British three-day event team for the 1952 Olympics. The team went on to win gold in Helsinki. For the next 35 years, it continued to be one of the leading equestrian training centres in Britain.

Exmoor adventures...

The clip-clop’s faded now, but you don’t need to go far to find riding stables to enjoy your own canter over Exmoor’s heather hills. Shanks’s Pony will do just as well for a more sedate exploration of the National Park with its red deer to spot, fabulous views from towering Dunkery Beacon and unpolluted starry skies. This is splendid walking country.

Country house comforts...

The house later became a hotel, which accounts for the comfort, the profusion of bathrooms (all 15 bedrooms are en suite) and wood-panelled bar - don’t forget to bring supplies to mix the perfect pre-dinner martinis to enjoy on the terrace, DJs optional.

Country pursuits...

For the complete country house experience, why not take advantage of the opportunity for a spot of traditional shooting and fishing? If your whim is more peace-loving, amble across the two fields which lead to the pebbly beach at Porlock Weir. If you’ve serious surfing skills you can bring your board and catch a swell, otherwise sit back and enjoy a refreshing glass at the Bottom Ship inn.

Your own space...

Declared by a guest “the perfect venue for large gatherings”, Porlock Vale House is waiting to welcome you. If you don’t have the full 30 guests, don’t worry – you can book the house without the top floor at reduced cost for up to 16 guests. With a playroom for the children and bar for the grown ups, you won't want to leave!

(If a big, sociable gathering isn't for you but you love the sound of a break on this peaceful Exmoor coast, there are two smaller cottages within the grounds - Garden View and Vale View Apartment, each sleeping four.)
