Luxury holiday cottage with views over Dartmouth

Hot off the press

Mainstay is a South Devon stunner in popular waterside Kingswear…

When it comes to smashing locations, it doesn’t get much better than fabulous Mainstay, a newly renovated cottage with far-reaching views across the River Dart to Dartmouth and the elegant, historic Britannia Royal Naval College.

Charming Kingswear...
Kingswear is a characterful village with a relaxing pace of life. Enjoy a refreshing drink at the waterside Ship Inn whilst you watch the vision of sailing boats drifting on sun-dappled water around the mouth of the river, protected by 16th century Kingswear Castle perched on the rocks. Within the village you’ll find a choice of other friendly pubs and restaurants which serve delicious local seafood.

Steam trains and cream teas...
When unpacked and settled into Mainstay, enjoying the ever-changing view, you may not want to go far. But if you feel the urge to explore, don’t miss a trip on the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway which terminates at a station in the village. A Puffing Billy will take you on a nostalgic ride through lovely countryside to the old-fashioned seaside resort of Paignton.

Closer to home is Coleton Fishacre, a National Trust Arts and Crafts house in coastal gardens. The tea room is award-winning, so stop for a Devonshire cream tea after admiring the stylish interior and picturesque setting.

Over the water to Dartmouth...
A visit to Kingswear isn’t complete without popping across the river for a closer look at Dartmouth. Car and foot ferries depart from the slipway, and there’s another foot ferry from a nearby pontoon. Take plenty of spending money since in fashionable Dartmouth you’ll find an even more enticing choice of restaurants, cafés and interesting boutique shops. To avoid temptation, take a wander around the historic streets with their striking old buildings, including a twin castle opposite Kingswear Castle.

Best foot forward...
Walkers, bring your boots! Kingswear is the perfect starting point, with walks radiating in all directions. The South West Coast Path heads off along the coast from the village. Go west via Dartmouth or head east towards Brixham (about 10 miles if you go all the way) with sights of Froward Point, Greenway garden and Man Sands to enjoy along the Path.

Agatha Christie and beaches...
Less strenuous is the 4½ mile Dart Valley Trail to Greenway, Agatha Christie’s house now owned by the National Trust; even on this shorter route you experience ancient woodland, the steam railway line and the wonderful riverbank – heaven! Not so keen on Shanks’s Pony? Hop in the car and in 3½ miles you’re at stunning golden Blackpool Sands, reckoned to be the closest you can get to the Med without a passport.

Home comfort...

And so… back home to more marvels and a comfortable welcome at Mainstay. Just a short stroll from the waterside and ferry, the cottage has been designed ‘upside down’ to bring masses of light and those terrific views into the upstairs open-plan living area with its stylish decor and local artwork. The dining table has been positioned for views whilst you eat and a telescope makes the TV in the comfy living area unnecessary. Two double bedrooms on the lower level, one en suite, make this a wonderful location for two couples to explore the area together.
