Pet friendly Christmas cottages

Hot off the press

It wouldn't be a family celebration without Santa Paws - check out this selection of festive crackers which welcome your whole two- and four-legged clan...

Christmas in a country or coastal cottage is a wonderful occasion, guaranteed to bring the family together and create special memories to cherish. A glowing log fire, a big dining table with masses of room for the turkey, the crackers and candles and everyone's elbows, a kitchen fully equipped to cater for a big group, a big cosy sitting room for board game battles or to watch a festive movie together... escape this year to a cottage with space for everyone.

And that includes our family pets. "Happiness is a warm puppy," said Snoopy's creator and we couldn't agree more. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the dog to warm your feet (and hog the fire), savage the wrapping paper and show unconditional appreciation for the charred pigs-in-blankets everyone pushed to one side.

If you're a dog lover, we've just what you need to make your Christmas complete: a choice of festive pet-friendly cottages, all with a fireplace to give you (and Santa) a warm welcome and sackfuls of sparkly Christmas cheer.

Haye Barton Farm

St Ive, South Cornwall
Sleeps 14

Room for all and an inglenook to hang your stockings from - this rambling farmhouse is the perfect old-fashioned home to fill with carols and the aroma of mince pies and mulled wine.

Orchard Cottage

Hartland, North Devon
Sleeps 10

This lovely thatched house, once part of the Hartland Abbey estate, welcomes three dogs (more by arrangement) and has an inglenook fireplace and the bonus of a steamy indoor swimming pool.

Tremorla

Boscastle, North Cornwall
Sleeps 9

Gather round the open fire in the big living room and if the celebrations reach crescendo, you can escape to the peaceful snug for a rerun of Only Fools and Horses or to the South West Coast Path to blow the cobwebs away. Now with 20% off - from just £20 per person per night.

Rambling Rose Cottage

Kingston, South Devon
Sleeps 6

Up to four dogs can accompany you to this gorgeous 16th century cottage, just 200 yards from the friendly Dolphin Inn in this pretty village, with its shipwreck panelling and big table for Christmas dinner.

Badgers

Charmouth, Dorset
Sleeps 6

This Grade II listed coastal cottage is surprisingly spacious with room to spread out across two sitting rooms and a dining room and a footpath to the 'Jurassic Coast' beach to hunt for fossils exposed by winter storms.

Evergreen

Rinsey Cove, The Lizard, Cornwall
Sleeps 6

White painted beams and French antique furniture make Evergreen a magical wonderland for a sparkly Christmas. You can walk the dogs along the cliff path and come home to snuggle up beside the open fire.

Tinners Cottage

Nancledra, West Cornwall
Sleeps 4

Beautifully renovated, this 18th century Cornish cottage is full of character with its farmhouse style kitchen/dining room and sitting room with atmospheric log burner, plus you're only three miles from beautiful St Ives where you can admire the lights twinkling over the harbour and find those last minute gifts.

The Hay Barn

Halwell, South Devon
Sleeps 5

This comfy detached cottage has been beautifully converted from a Devon barn where you can peacefully walk or run off any festive over indulgence over the traditional farm or dive into the fabulous shared indoor pool, and the children can let off steam in the play area and games room.

Ayshmoor

Throwleigh, Dartmoor, Devon
Sleeps 4

Time slows down at this 18th century cottage in the heart of the moors, a place to escape TV clamour and relive a simple and nostalgic traditional Christmas-tide around the ancient granite inglenook, yet with the comfiest of 21st century opulence and warmth.

Little Torside

Mary Tavy, Dartmoor, Devon
Sleeps 2

Just right for one or two plus a small dog, Little Torside is a peaceful retreat and, if you don't feel like cooking, the Mary Tavy Inn is serving up Christmas dinner and a Boxing Day quiz. Combine that with the sumptuous four-course Christmas Wine Tasting Dinner at the Bedford Hotel on 23rd December and long doggy walks around Tavy Cleave and Dartmoor's highest peaks, and you have the perfect Christmas escape.
