Do you ever ponder the talent, toil and techniques that were applied behind the easel when you fall in love with an amazing seascape or portrait? Here’s your chance to find out… Over 16 days from 9th to 24th September 2017, over 200 artists in 142 venues will open their doors wide for the Devon Artist Network Open Studios event.
Helpful Holidays is pleased and proud to sponsor this free event again, which attracts over 35,000 visitors each year. We’re passionate about the region and feel privileged to support wonderfully talented emerging artists who are inspired by the beauty of the West Country. The opportunity to observe behind studio scenes is popular with our holidaymakers too.
Helpful Holidays sponsors the Emerging Artist Bursary scheme, which this year has been awarded to five enterprising artists:
Annette Pearson, Exmouth
This year’s overall winner, Annette specialises in printmaking, experimenting with alcohol inks and combining them with lino and dry point with exciting results.
Shirley Bebbington, Exmouth
Shirley has been exploring painting and colour in the area of portraiture, focussing on links between classical portraiture and her sitters’ modern ‘selves’.
Caroline Morgan, Exeter
Caroline is influenced by her Scandinavian roots, producing hand-cut paper collage-style illustrations, with a special passion for illustrated poetry.
Belinda Reynell, Mid Devon
Belinda specialises in oil painting, especially of the Devon coast and moors. She’s now introducing a more abstract style to her seascapes and landscapes.
Nicola Axe, East Devon
Nicola is a stone carver who has recently begun applying the styles and subjects of traditional Japanese art when working with stone such as Serpentine and Opal.
Adrian, from the Helpful Holidays team, met and congratulated the bursary winners at The Wood, a fabulous holiday home accommodating 17 in the nautical Devon town of Salcombe.
So come west this autumn for a glimpse into the lives of working artists and maybe head home with your own work of art, purchased at source without gallery commission.
We’ve gorgeous Devon cottages available during the event, all pretty as a picture and central bases for touring the studios – you might like to pack your own watercolours too. Have a look at The Cottage with its own indoor pool, or West Henstill House, both thatched ‘chocolate-box’ havens in the heart of Devon. Or, if you prefer seascapes, The Dolphins on Shaldon’s waterfront may be just your cup of tea.
