  • “We both loved Wickam cottage and having been to Calstock before we enjoyed exploring more of the area.”

The cottage is well equipped and comfortable providing a nice base to stay near so many Cornish attractions.

The cottage is well equipped and comfortable providing a nice base to stay near so many Cornish attractions. We were please to have booked the cottage and will be visiting again sometime. Directions would benefit by saying "down church street until you see Boot Inn" as we felt it was more than 100 metres. A welcome break and we thank you and will be back. Karl & Jean

The property

Wickham Cottage is a delightful, mid-terrace cottage situated within the riverside village of Calstock.

This one-bedroom dwelling is ideal for a couple looking to escape to Cornwall.

It is an appealing property with wonderful character features - an original stone fireplace, wooden floorboards and quirky staircases - creating a charming atmosphere.

Step into the well-appointed kitchen with its cosy dining area where you can enjoy an evening meal.

Follow the staircase up, where you will find a welcoming sitting room, the perfect place to relax after a busy day exploring: perhaps curl up with a good book or maybe plan the next day's activities.

A further set of stairs leads you up to an elegant double bedroom with its lovely outlook over the roof tops of the old village and down to the river.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of the village, you are less than a 5-minute walk to the local amenities, including a café and two pubs - perfect for those evenings where you don't feel inclined to cook.

For days out, you have the entire Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to explore, complete with miles of walking routes through its distinctive landscape: the area is a World Heritage Site, thanks to its fascinating Cornish mining heritage.

For a taste of history enjoy a pleasant walk along the riverbank to the National Trust property of Cotehele where you can explore the tapestry-lined property and its attractive grounds.

Alternatively, it is just half an hour's scenic train ride to the port city of Plymouth, where there is a wealth of amenities and attractions.

Wickham Cottage is an idyllic retreat for a couple looking to explore Cornwall.

About the location

Gunnislake 3 miles; Tavistock 8 miles.

Calstock is a village in Cornwall, although it stands on the meandering River Tamar close to the Devon border and is dominated by the spectacular Calstock Viaduct, a giant 11-arched structure that still carries the railway line above the River Tamar along the picturesque branch line down to Plymouth. Calstock has been an important quay for centuries, transporting tin, copper and granite out of this important mining area downstream to Plymouth Docks. Today Calstock is a quiet village with a vibrant arts centre attracting musicians and artists from around Cornwall. A mile downstream brings you to Cotehele, a well-preserved medieval National Trust house with glorious gardens sweeping down to the River Tamar. Upstream from Calstock is Morwellham Quay, another important river port and now a living history tourist attraction where visitors can explore a copper mine by taking a train deep underground, admire the working Victorian farm or just quietly enjoy the beautiful Tamar Valley wildlife.

:Please note the stairs are fairly steep inside the cottage.
