“Hi there, We’ve been to the smaller house before and we love the location and the calm and space, and members of our party had visited the big house before but we were all taken aback by the high cost in relation to how little upkeep and care the house seems to have had.”

The window was broken in the hallway, and must have been so for a long time. It was cold and seemed careless to leave it permanent broken. No logs were supplied (we own a cottage ourselves and provide logs and kindling and charge a fraction of the cost of Polcreek.) The tap in the bathroom was broken, it wasn’t very straightforward getting hold of Sykes, the website doesn’t create an obvious contact us phone number for problems, we found the contact in the book but wondered why Sykes don’t ...

The window was broken in the hallway, and must have been so for a long time. It was cold and seemed careless to leave it permanent broken. No logs were supplied (we own a cottage ourselves and provide logs and kindling and charge a fraction of the cost of Polcreek.) The tap in the bathroom was broken, it wasn’t very straightforward getting hold of Sykes, the website doesn’t create an obvious contact us phone number for problems, we found the contact in the book but wondered why Sykes don’t make it easier to pick up the phone if there’s an issue. However, once we did they came fast to fix it. The broken tap, with a note above it saying it breaks regularly felt unsafe with a very hot water that couldn’t be controlled and kids using it. We were left an out of date cream tea. The kitchen could do with more equipment, for cooking etc. The cupboards were dirty. And the carpets not only smelt musty but also triggered asthma type symptoms in the living room and room above it. I imagine because of the sea being close by it gets damp but it felt like they are very old, and for close to 4K for a weeks stay I was expecting an environment that felt like more care was taken to maintain a comfortable stay. I found correspondence emails from Sykes were not especially welcoming, but rather had an emphasis on the money that would be taken if breakages happened and the strict rules about leaving on time. These are obviously important points to be made but didn’t feel there was balance with a more pleasant welcoming tone. I won’t publish this below so you / the owners have the opportunity to take it onboard. However, I really felt that the standard of the house which is rough around the edges would be ok, if the cost reflected it, but it doesn’t.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. Polcreek Farmhouse is owned by a small family company with one property. The owners want all guests to feel that the house is a relaxed 'home from home' and are always disappointed if guests come away not feeling satisfied. They work hard to keep the house well maintained. The house is listed and some repairs are not as straight forward due to this. The owners of the property have an ongoing programme of improvements and these include some of the items you have mentioned. They thank you for your feedback and will take this onboard. Sykes would also like to address the issues you have raised - Logs are not usually supplied (other than a starter pack) in self-catering properties, particularly during the summer months. With regard to the bathroom tap, our contact email is listed in the property information book so that you are able to contact us if necessary. We were notified of this issue late evening and the tap was fixed by the afternoon of the next day, so we are pleased that we could get this resolved quickly for you. The handyman also looked at the window, but it could not be fixed during your stay as it needed to removed, the intention was not to leave it permanently broken. Had you raised the issues about the kitchen equipment and cupboards during our communications we would have been happy to help with this. Our emails are intended to be helpful and informative and we endeavour to ensure the tone is pleasant and welcoming - these are usually well-received by our guests. We will consider your comments and thank you for feeding back - Cornish Cottage Holidays Property Owner

Nearby is The Roseland Heritage coast and several safe, sandy beaches. The coastal path winds its way over the cliffs and down among the coves through some of the UK’s most spectacular scenery.
