“We have stayed at Chough Cottage a number of times over the past 10-12 years and have always been happy with the quality and cleanliness of the property.”

However, sadly this time we felt the cottage was grubby - dusty, dirty switches, the cutlery drawer was in need of a thorough clean the frying pan was dirty and the oven hadn't been cleaned prior to our arrival. We also found food left in the cupboard and freezer compartment. We feel that it is time for an overall update especially the hob and oven, the towels could do with replacing - they were very worn. The little courtyard area was neglected and not a pleasant place at all - not as per your description. Despite this we still enjoyed our stay but felt we should be honest with our feedback.

We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at Chough Cottage, but we apologise that in some areas standards fell below what you and we would wish for. We are grateful to you for bringing these to our attention, and will of course address these issues. As you will know from previous stays, the inner courtyard is small and enclosed. On our recent visit we repainted the walls of the courtyard and cleaned the decking. We realise that some moss tends to fall into the decking, especially during stormy weather. The cleaners do keep an eye on this, but it is not practical for them to completely clear it every changeover. We are aware that the electric hob is a little old-fashioned. It has been hard to do upgrading in the context of the pandemic, but we are looking to upgrade this as soon as we have a gap in bookings and access by the relevant trades is possible. We have spoken to the cleaners, and are confident that the cleaning issues were a one off, as they are normally very thorough. We have now replaced some duvets and bedlinen, and also checked all the towels. Most towels are thick and fluffy, but we have purchased new ones to replace the few which were less good. We hope this reassures you, and hope that you will book to stay again soon. Owner relations

The property

In Kingsand, a little 'upside down' house with good sea views, snuggled in a row of 18th century houses, 150 yards up from the beach and 60 yards from the Coast Path.

Access is from a narrow lane which has no passing traffic. Hall (for coats/boots) and 3 steps up to two bedrooms - a twin, and a double (TV/DVD) with French windows to a tiny courtyard, imaginatively done just for two; loo.

From the hall, stairs (stairgate) up to light open-plan living/dining/kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, fridge, electric cooker) with TV/DVD/PVR, iPod dock, pine floor (rug) and those lovely time-wasting sea views - binoculars provided to observe passing shipping.

Also from the hall, more stairs down to smart, roomy bathroom (step up to roll-top bath, separate shower, washbasin, washer-drier).

Loading and unloading, 30 yards away; car park, 200 yards.

Thoroughly well done, comfortable and convenient. Kingsand and Cawsand: exquisite adjoining fishing villages in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty sheltered by a wooded headland; pebble-and-sand beaches, family pubs, cafés, essential shops.

Watersports hire in Cawsand.

Whitsand Bay, 1 mile; Mount Edgcumbe (800 acres for walking), and seasonal pedestrian ferry to Plymouth (city amenities, theatre, cinema), 2½ miles.

Plymouth by car ferry, 8½ miles.
