Reviews

    • “Although a beautiful old cottage, certainly not luxury, key ailments of a good holiday include small details such as minimal shopping and not washing up, this cottage has neither a freeze or dishwasher. Minor things include a loose wire in the television aerial, loose wire in the kettle plug and apart from plates and cutlery there was nothing in sets of 4 or 6 . Garden was scruffy with old discarded pots thrown in the bushes, hedgerows grown to a height were you cannot enjoy the view and no explanation on recycling. We use cottage rentals 2 to 3 times a year, I would never return to Samson cottage in its, present form.”

    Mrs Ash, Chichester, September 2018

    • “Lovely cottage. Very comfortable and peaceful. Could do with a dishwasher and there is plenty of space for one in the kitchen. Who wants to wash up on holiday?! Previous comments made it sound like the cottage was hard to reach without a 4x4, and grumbled about narrow roads. The access was fine for any normal car. If you're lucky enough to own a Ferrari then take your other car, but all normal cars will have no trouble. As for narrow roads, only the last 2 miles from the A30 were on local roads and they were fine. Peaceful, rural locations don't come with your own slip road off a main road.”

    Mr Grainge, Lightwater, August 2018

    • “The access to the cottage is not really suitable for low down or sports cars. The parking area is large, but it is easy to get stuck in the stones if you park on the sloping area. The garden could be beautiful but has been allowed to go wild with lots of pots with dead plants in. The view is from one of the bedrooms and the raised patio area, we were a little disappointed that there wasn't a view from the house. Damson Cottage is really not suitable for those with mobility issues, the path has wonky slabs and is covered in rolling stones, the stairs have a steep turn and the rails are not very stable, as expected the rooms are small and there are lots of steps. Despite these issues we had a good holiday based at Damson Cottage. We coped with the narrow lanes and found lots of walks from the cottage.”

    Mrs Oldcorne, Clitheroe, August 2018

    • “The cottage wasn’t cleaned as the caretaker had not been notified we were arriving! Kept on hold for 16 mins on the number the information in the cottage said to ring if there were any problems, gave up butmanaged to eventually get through to Sykes to report cottage had not been cleaned. Once reported the cottage was cleaned to a very high standard and welcome package was amazing. Stairs are stone and could be challenging for young children and people unsteady on their feet. Road to property is very challenging as there are many pot holes! The location is ideal for peace and quiet. Roadford lake is ideal for lovely walks.”

    Mr Rogers, Bicester, July 2018

    • “Cottage was great, full of character and really peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed our week and the dog loved the garden. Damson cottage is very remote up steep hills and narrow roads so make sure your car can cope. The cottage could do with a freezer and the mattress in the smaller double was a little lumpy but would definitely consider again.”

    Mr Self, Faversham, July 2018

    • “We had a lovely week at Damson Cottage, very quite and very out of the way. If you want to be local to a village, then this is not the place for you. The cottage is very quaint, but not suitable for anyone with aches and pains as the stairs to upstairs is quite difficult. I suffer from arthritis and had to be very careful going up and coming down the stairs. Let very welcome pack and we had a great time in the”

    • “Solitude, comfortable conservatory, log burner, secluded garden”

    Mr Bebbington, Langport, September 2017

    • “On arrival could not open key lock ,had to ring office ,entry track to cottage very bad probably need 4x4 to use it,thought the front of cottage Was not looking good baskets on front full of weeds branches of roses catching car, windows need cleaning poolroom at rear full of spider webs ,rear garden was described as pretty not so ,full of weeds ,and overgrown, pans in kitchen need replacing also , recycling needs to be explained better was very dissatisfied with experience, also needs fans in bedrooms I know this weather is exceptional but the small windows do not allow much air in .”

The Property

Nestling between the patchwork green fields of Devon's rural countryside and the wild rugged moorland of Dartmoor, sits this enchanting thatch cottage. Its position is tucked away down a private country lane, among a handful of cottages in the tiny hamlet of Higher Rexton near the village of Broadwoodwidger and the Devon/Cornwall border. Look forward to time spent exploring the wilderness of Dartmoor, where inspiring walks through valleys and pasture will lead you to ancient moorland villages and cosy country inns. Head West to the North Cornish for days on the beach or to hike the dramatic cliff tops, guaranteed to invigorate the senses and recharge weary souls. Or, simply unwind in the company of family and friends, where winters evenings can be spent beside the flickering flames of the log fire, enjoying golden sunsets over the moorland, or sharing stories of the day over a bottle of wine in the southwest facing conservatory that overlooks the private enclosed garden.

Damson cottage is the perfect country escape where the night owl is the only sound to break the dark silence. Brimming with character and original features; exposed timber beams, hand-made latched wooden doors, a spiral stone staircase and low sloping ceilings are all evidence of the history of this quintessential thatched country cottage. A welcoming sitting room is furnished with cream sofas arranged to enjoy the warming glows emanating from the log burner that sits inside a large inglenook fireplace. A bespoke farmhouse kitchen will inspire chefs of the family who can conjure up meals on the Rangemaster cooker with induction hob. Mealtimes can be enjoyed in the recent addition to the cottage; a large spacious conservatory leading out into the sunny enclosed garden with private gated access to a public footpath for walks in the valley below. There are three bedrooms, one with private shower room. Please note that access to one bedroom is very narrow with a low sloping doorway. There is a family bathroom on the ground floor.
