It's at the far end of a small moor-edge village and a few minutes' walk will take you into the vast landscape of the wild moor, with Steeperton Tor miles ahead and Irishman's Wall running way off to the right over Belstone Tor. Equipment is adequate to good - for cooking there's a 2-ring ceramic hob and a combination microwave/grill. We got caught out with a part-baked baguette - no actual oven. Plenty of pots and pans - really only room for one to work; two is difficult. Bedroom and bathroom are large and comfortable. TV a little complicated to run but good once you work it out, and extremely good wifi using in-cottage hub. Mobile reception nonexistent for O2. Heating works well. Jane and Simon very friendly and helpful - they left scones with jam and cream, a pint of milk and 6 nice eggs for us! We had a lovely memorable week.

The property

About ½ mile from the pub at Belstone, a dear little detached house close to the friendly owners’ handsome house in a large, well-ordered garden (use of astro turf tennis court).

At the back, a small, private garden (table/chairs, barbecue) with gate to the open moor - brilliant for walkers.

Inside, very well done, neat and cosy.

Five uneven steps (handrails) up to the entrance; living/dining/kitchen (combi-microwave, fridge, two-ring hob - no conventional oven) with ‘living flame’ electric stove, TV/DVD and view to garden/moors.

Roomy double bedroom with washbasin and en suite bathroom (suite, 4’10" long bath with shower over).

Spring water.

Laundry service available.

Two adult bicycles available (extra).

A welcoming hideaway, just right for walking, relaxing and watching birds. Belstone: little high village (good food pub, church, village green) on the edge of the open moor, brilliant base for walking Dartmoor's highest hills and wildest valleys.

Okehampton (small town, golf, tennis, leisure centre, bicycle hire, cinema), 3½ miles; Chagford, 8; sea/sand/surf at Bude, about 30.

Riding/pony-trekking and fishing locally.

Filling station/shop (24 hours), 1 mile.
