On arrival at 2 smugglers close we were greeted by 2 bottles of wine, tea coffee sugar and biscuits and even milk in the fridge which we thought was a nice touch. The cottage was very spacious and came equipped with everything you could need to make it a home from home. We took our dog and they even supplied a torch for taking her out at night as its very dark. We found the half mile walk to the beach ok but it is up and down some steep hills as most of branscombe is. The roads leading to and from the village are single track and take a bit of getting used to. The masons arms is just a two minute walk away for a nice pint or a meal. There are footpaths all around the village and by the beach there is the SW coastal path leading to Beer and Seaton, which are both lovely. You will find the sea shanty cafe and large car park here and the footpath above is easier to walk than the coastal path. We had a lovely week here and would recommend the cottage and Branscombe to anyone who enjoys peace and quiet.

The property

In Branscombe, on a quiet lane less than ½ mile from the beach and Coast Path and yards from one of the popular pubs, a neat cottage in a small terrace of three.

Surrounded by National Trust land with lovely long views from most rooms and excellent walking from the door, the cottage has been enjoyed by the owners’ family as their own holiday home; a recent revamp brings a smart modern feel with the occasional characterful retro touch.

From the private drive (lockable storage area) to the rear, gentle slope to tiled steps up to landing (table/chairs) and front door to lobby (fridge-freezer).

Country-style kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, larder fridge, electric oven), full of light with big picture window and those views.

Smart living room (smart TV/DVD, wireless music system).

Upstairs (stairgate), three bedrooms - a double and two snug twins (limited space around beds); bathroom (suite, shower over bath).

Alternative entrance via lane with 2 steps up to back door.

The beach and pubs are an easy stroll from this handy heart-of-village location with beautiful surroundings. Branscombe: one of the prettiest villages on the south coast (church, two excellent pubs, licensed restaurant, thatched cottages) with a fine pebbly beach, located at the meeting of two valleys or combes.

Sidmouth (seaside town), 3 miles.

Lyme Regis (lovely seaside harbour town) and famous 'Jurassic' fossil coast, 10 miles.

About the location

Sidmouth 5.6 miles.

Branscombe is located at the meeting point of two valleys, home to a collection of thatched cottages that lead the way to the sea, and the village is believed to be the longest in England. A number of historic buildings are worth noting; the Old Bakery and Forge, both National Trust properties, are just some of which can be found nearby. Branscombe Mouth has a beach with good parking facilities, a licensed restaurant complete with thatched roof and a wealth of rock pools just waiting to be searched for crabs and other sea creatures. Why not take a trip out to Sidmouth and the surrounding countryside where you’ll find a great range of attractions and activities to entertain the whole family, including a visit to the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary with over 500 rescue donkeys to see. World of Country Life is just a few miles away and is an award winning family day out.
