John was also there and gave us an insight to the area. We were a family of three generations from aged 7 to 70 and there was enough space for us all. The children really enjoyed exploring the house and playing outside. They even gave up gadgets for the week, which was a bonus !!!”

    • “Peaceful pastoral location, with sheep baaing and birds twittering. The house is so spacious and there was room for 3 family groups to mingle and separate as desired. We suggested some curtains or blinds for the top floor bedroom to avoid early waking, although the view is spectacular across the hills, so I could why you might not want to hide it! Beds large and comfortable, carpeting thick and clean, games, books, pictures make this a unique holiday home. We enjoyed a super week.”

    • “Beechlands is a lovely house in a fantastic location. Sadly, however, we had a lot of problems, which were exacerbated by the cold and wet weather in early April. 1. The two radiators in the top bedroom weren't working properly and need bleeding - and only one of the three windows had blinds. So the room was very cold. And although the coloured ceiling lights are fun, they're not very practical or functional when it's dark. 2. There wasn't enough water pressure to have a hot bath in top bedroom. By the time the bath was 1/4 full the water had gone cold. 3. The underfloor heating in the conservatory - described as the perfect place to dry dogs and walking gear - wasn't working. 4. As we couldn't dry our coats in the conservatory, we thought we'd hang them on the hooks above the radiator in the ground floor bathroom. But that radiator wasn't working either. 5. There was no welcome manual with information about when the heating comes on, where to put the rubbish, when the rubbish gets collected, how to recycle stuff, etc. Just a laminated sheet of paper with a few basic details. 6. The radiator in the red ensuite bedroom wasn't working properly (the top half got warm but the bottom half didn't) and the radiator/heated towel rail in the ensuite didn't work at all. 7. The dishwasher was leaking.. 8. The kettle blew and tripped the electrics. 9. The DVD player in the room with the fire wasn't working. Luckily one of the guests, who is a bit of a technie, managed to sort out the scart leads and get it going. I emailed Helpful Holidays about the above on the 1st of April and Helen kindly got in touch with me. I also sent the housekeeper Mary Lou a text and she immediately sorted out a new kettle, a second duvee for the red bedroom and two electric heaters for the conservatory. She also offered to bleed the radiators but we were happy to do that once we had been given a radiator key. Once we were warm and dry, things got a lot better. Having been made aware of the problems, I'm sure the owners and Helpful Holidays will sort them out and future guests will have a lovely time.”

The Property

½ mile from the centre of Chagford, on the side of a hill with long views across the town to moorland beyond, a handsome Victorian detached house in beautiful gardens. To one side, a terrace (swing seat, picnic table, benches) and grassed area with fruit trees. Steps (gate at top) down to a lower terrace. You are also welcome to wander the 26 acres of field beyond and the large ponds (unfenced) below the house, a haven for wildlife (mallard, Canada geese); fly fishing permitted in one pond on a catch and release basis (bring your own rods). To the other side, beyond a driveway, are the owners’ stables and a few cottages which share use of the fields and ponds. Inside, very much a country home; relaxed, comfortable. Wood floors (rugs) downstairs, and large windows make it light and bright. Small porch to hall. Elegant living room (TV/DVD) with the views. Smaller sitting room with woodburner, TV/DVD and French windows to terrace. Bespoke kitchen (dishwasher, fridge freezer, range-style cooker/gas hob, TV/DVD) with breakfast table/chairs, off which a large sunroom, useful for damp coats/boots/dogs. Dining room with open fire. Office with woodburner, sofas and children’s toys. Cloakroom (loo). From the hall, uneven stone steps down to cellar with games room (pool table, table football), utility/drying room (washing machine, tumble drier) and door to lower terrace and ponds. Stairs (stairgates) from hall up to four bedrooms - a large double (6'6" bed) with dressing room (day bed, space for cot) and en suite bathroom (suite plus hand-shower), a twin (2'6" beds, zip-linkable to 5' double) with views over the ponds, a double (washbasin) with princess-and-the-pea-style four-poster bed, and another smart double (5' bed, footboard) with en suite bathroom (suite plus hand-shower); shower-room (suite). More stairs (stairgates) up to a large modern attic bedroom with 5' double bed and a single (footboard), the best views of all and smart en suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath, two washbasins). Professional catering available. Damages Deposit £250. A tremendous house for gatherings of all sorts, with lots of space and generous accommodation.

Chagford: lively, friendly little town (pubs, shops, outdoor swimming pool, tennis) away from main roads in the shelter of high Dartmoor. Past it the River Teign (fishing) hurries through woods and meadows below Castle Drogo (Nat. Trust). Excellent walking; superb views. Open moor, 2 miles; golf, 3; Exeter (city amenities), 17; sea/beaches, about 20.

Regional Information

CHAGFORD Okehampton 12 miles; Exeter 21 miles. A picturesque town at the northern point of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. Chagford, one of the five Stannary towns of Dartmoor, is small in size but is packed with amenities and things to do. There is a wide range of shops as well as four pubs. Chagford also has more active facilities such as public tennis court and an open-air swimming pool to enjoy at your leisure. It is a town of great history, home to the Three Crowns Hotel which dates back to the 1200's. Chagford is well known for its culture, hosting film, literary and music festivals in the town as well as an annual running race, known as Two Hills Race. Just over 21 miles away is the bustling, beautiful city of Exeter for a different kind of break, definitely worth a visit. The charming, attractive town of Okehampton sits just 12 miles away.
