“This was idyllic; the view to the estuary was spectacular - we spent many hours sitting watching the boats go by and the tide come in an out.”

Its. perfect relaxing setting and the village of Appledore supports that relaxation. The hosts were superb in communicating with us and helping out. The cottage is charming and well set out with mod cons as well as historical features. We loved our stay and will come back !

The property

Mariners Cottage is at the heart of the historic north Devon fishing village of Appledore, set on the seaward side of the iconic Irsha Street, a stone's throw from the water where the wide estuary of the River Taw meets the open sea and with superb estuary views.

Ideal for a group of friends, this delightful property offers a lovely garden perfect for enjoying the summer months in, and a cosy woodburning stove, making it the perfect base all year round.

Arriving at the property, step into the kitchen/diner to discover all the amenities you need throughout your stay such as an electric oven and an induction hob, perfect for rustling up some delicious meals for the group to enjoy at the dining table.

After your meal, fling open the patio doors and look out over the vast waters while the fresh sea air comes in; the kitchen and dining space is also home to a sofa and an armchair, ideal if you want to escape from the group with a cup of tea and a good book.

Continuing to impress is the sitting room, boasting white beams, you can look forward to sinking into the sofa to watch TV with your loved ones while the woodburning stove gently warms the room.

When sleep calls, head to the bedrooms for some well-earned rest; the cottage hosts three bedrooms including a ground-floor king-size double perfect for those with limited mobility, as well as a super king-size and finally a twin, so there is plenty of choice for varying party sizes.

The bedrooms are tastefully decorated in a light blue and white colour scheme giving a real seaside feel to the property and allowing an abundance of natural light into the space.

Completing the interior of the property is a shower room where the group can prepare for the day, home to a walk-in shower, a basin and a WC, in addition there is a handy ground floor WC and basin.

Take advantage of the outdoor space in the summer months, where you will find a variety of estuarine plants, dining furniture perfect for eating dinner al fresco or just savouring your morning coffee while admiring the views.

If you don't fancy cooking one evening, take a trip to The Royal Plaice for a traditional fish and chip supper by the water, or even back at the cottage.

If you want to dine in, why not try The Royal George for some pub grub.

Spend your days wandering the nearby Northam Burrows Country Park and discovering the untouched grasslands.

Brush up on your history while in the area and spend an afternoon in The North Devon Maritime Museum, which is just a short walk from the cottage and gives a fascinating insight on the rich history of shipbuilding and seafaring.

A long and scenic walk, or just a short car journey will bring you to Westward Ho, a charming coastal town offering plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants and a golden sandy beach to spend your day soaking up some rays.

For activities in the area, you can take part in surfing, golf, fishing and many other watersports on the seafront.

If you are a fan of animals and the countryside, a fun-filled day out is certain at The Big Sheep, where you can watch sheep racing and if it's the right time of year, join in on lambing season.

The nearby town of Bideford is also worth the visit, offering art galleries and a shopping outlet centre, as well as plenty more pubs and eateries to fuel your adventurous day.

Whatever your style of adventure, choose Mariners Cottage as your base.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £150.
