    “Sheer delight”

What a find, this adorable cottage in the beautiful village of Dalwood just 5 miles from Axminster is a sheer delight. The owners live in the attached part of the cottage and were the perfect hosts, discreet but on hand if anything was required and great company when we met up in the local pub which is just 50 yards away. Worry not, there is no noise or rowdy customers here, the pub (Tuckers Arms) really enhances the stay with superb food and real ales and good wines but make sure you book as it ...

Worry not, there is no noise or rowdy customers here, the pub (Tuckers Arms) really enhances the stay with superb food and real ales and good wines but make sure you book as it is clearly very popular. But back to the cottage. It has absolutely everything you could need and more. There were some lovely touches from cakes on the table on arrival, meringues in a jar as well as a jar of pistachios and even a decanter of Sherry. Nicely furnished it has a log burner which we didn’t need to use and the bedroom and bathroom are both good sizes. The bed is slightly on the soft side, but wasn’t a problem for me even though I am a chronic back sufferer. There are some beautiful walks to be had around this area and whilst I only did the lanes of a morning, I still saw a woodpecker and Kingfisher so there is wildlife in abundance. Just up the road is a community shop for any items you may require and everyone is just so friendly. We were only there for 3 nights but I would certainly go back again for a much longer stay. The only slight downside is if you are a nervous driver, as the only way in is via narrow country lanes, but it certainly didn’t cause us a problem.

The property

50 yards from the pub in the heart of Dalwood, an attractive thatched cottage, one end of a beautifully restored, Grade II listed Devon longhouse where the owners and their friendly Labrador live.

Semi- detached, self-contained and private with its own entrance, the interior is stylish with big oak beams, painted floorboards (rug) and relaxing neutral colours.

Outside, within the pretty cottage garden, your own enclosed area (table/chairs) to enjoy all-day sun or relax in the shade of apple trees.

From side gate, gravelled path to front door to glazed porch (chairs).

Step up (5'8" lintel) to good-sized open-plan living/dining/kitchen (slimline dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, fridge, electric oven/2-ring induction hob) with huge inglenook fireplace (woodburner), TV/DVD, Xbox 360, iPod dock and lovely outlook over the garden.

Steep stairs up to 5'5" lintel into double bedroom (6' zip-linked bed or twin, TV/DVD) and bathroom (suite, shower over bath).

A charming place, just right for two to explore this interesting and diverse part of east Devon. Dalwood: pretty, friendly village (church, good food pub, PO/shop) within the Blackdown Hills conservation area.

Axminster (small town), 4 miles; Honiton, 6 miles.

The south coast at Lyme Regis, Seaton, Beer and Sidmouth, 7-11 miles.

Golf, fishing, riding nearby, and miles of footpaths.
