“Regatta House is an impressive ex Merchant/Sea Captain's residence built high on a near-vertical slope.”

This means that you can see the harbour and the town from virtually all of its windows which is magic. However, it's high ceilings mean that you'll be going up and down four extensive flights of stairs - on top of the walk into town which is extremely steep, if very rewarding. So this lovely spacious house is not for the faint-hearted or those with arthritic knees. ...

We loved the house and the town. Both have plenty to offer. The kitchen and bathrooms are very nicely done and we spent a lot of time with our family sitting round the dining table with its views of the town. We struggled to get comfortable and/or warm in the lounge as it (and the patio garden) are North facing and never see the sun. The log burning stove played us up all week and we are experienced with the eccentricities of real fires. It kept going out (probably due to damp logs). The sofas need replacing and offer no support/comfort whatsoever. It's a fine line between squidgy and sack of potatoes. Crowther's Hill is so interesting and historic. It would have been good to get some information on the history of the house. Overall, the house was very good value and we would recommend a stay.

The property

On a steep hill which leads down to the waterside and town centre and with period features complemented by modern comforts, this is ideal accommodation for enjoying the popular town and its surroundings.

Step into the hall and from there into your spacious sitting room, a lovely space with its high ceilings, wooden floors and sash windows.

You can snuggle up beside the woodburner to watch the Smart TV or gaze at the sublime views from the bay window.

Head downstairs to the pristine, white kitchen which has a table for enjoying family meals and glass doors to open wide to the terrace on a fine day.

The three comfortable bedrooms are laid charmingly over the first and second floors.

The sunny terrace is situated at the back of the house, where you can share alfresco meals and views to the River Dart.

The great bonus of this house is that you can wander out to browse the Elizabethan streets with their interesting shops and galleries and eat and drink at friendly pubs and great restaurants, meaning there is never a dull moment for all the family.

You can catch the ferry across to pretty Kingswear or take boat trips to the bustling old town of Totnes or the beaches at Torbay, and even hire a boat of your own.

Maybe take a tour of the historic and impressive Royal Naval College in Dartmouth.

This is nautical heaven and Regatta House, in the hub of waterside life, is a fascinating place to stay.

DARTMOUTH

Totnes 12 miles.

Dartmouth lies on the banks of the beautiful River Dart estuary in the popular and picturesque South Hams area of South Devon. Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the coast, Dartmouth is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Devon. It offers a stunning waterfront, ancient narrow streets lined with boutique shops, restaurants and art galleries plus many local events such as the annual Dart Music Festival and the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. There are many interesting cycling and walking routes around Dartmouth, including the South West Coast Path, the Dart Valley Trail and plenty of quiet country lanes. A trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway through picturesque countryside to Paignton is a must, and so is a boat trip across to Kingswear and on to Brixham, a pretty little harbour town. For those seeking some beach activities, there is a wide choice in the South Hams area such as Blackpool Sands and Slapton Sands, both extremely popular sandy beaches are a stone's throw from Dartmouth.
