The burble of the river at the edge of the garden, birdsong- beautiful. Walks straight from the doorstep, perfect. Bedroom and bathroom very comfortable, loved the bath. Only downer was that the kitchen wasn't as clean as it could have been. the kettle and the teapot needed a clean and the taps and fridge door handles were sticky. I note that in other reviews there were no issues with cleanliness so perhaps it just got overlooked. The crockery was quite small and very dark brown- not my preference but that is just as is. Other than those small points it was a magical place to stay.

The property

Primrose Cottage, set on the banks of the river Yeo in the small village of Loxhore is a pretty, detached stone built cottage.

The utterly charming natural garden slopes gently down to the river where a bench has been placed for sitting and listening to the bees and birds.

Immediately outside, a small patio (table/chairs) with a more elevated view is the perfect spot for morning coffee.

Split level, enter into a newly fitted kitchen, leading to a useful utility room.

At the rear of the cottage is a neat king-size double bedroom with a smart bathroom room where you'll find a freestanding bath, shower, loo and basin.

From the kitchen, three steps up to living/dining room with high beamed ceiling open to the apex, woodburning stove, TV/DVD.

A gently inclining 3 mile stroll through woodland, where deer are often seen, brings you to Arlington Court.

Here you can explore the great house or meander through the acres of parkland.

Nearby Exmoor offers a wealth of opportunities for walkers, cyclists and wildlife lovers.

You're close to the coast too - around 30 minutes drive away you'll find some of the regions most popular beaches at Croyde and Saunton.

Primrose Cottage is a lovely cottage in an idyllic spot.

Loxhore: small ancient village (church) alongside the meandering river Yeo on the edge of the Arlington Court estate (National Trust) on the western edge of Exmoor.

Good country walks.

Markets, shops, cinema at Barnstaple, 6 miles; superb golf and fine beaches at Saunton, 8 miles, and Woolacombe, 10 miles.

About the location

Barnstaple 5 miles

A delightfully rural village, nestling amid lush green fields and wooded valleys on the edge of Exmoor. Famous for its country walks, birdlife and natural beauty, the area is perfect for the visitor seeking peace and quiet, but not isolation. Exmoor, with its rolling hills, red deer and stunning scenery, is the major attraction, with the rugged North Devon coast and its resort towns, sandy beaches, excellent surf and the SW Coast path coming a close second. There is much to do and see; the area boasts stately homes and gardens, theme parks for the kids, beautiful fishing villages, the shopping centres of Barnstaple and Bideford and, most importantly, mile upon mile of unspoilt countryside, from high moorland hills to rolling farmland, to the beautiful banks of the rivers Taw and Torridge. The countryside at its best.
