The property

This fabulous huge house is situated about a mile from Porlock, sheltered by woodland and looking to the sea.

Originating as a 19th century hunting lodge, it is a comfortable and spacious house to be enjoyed by big groups of friends and extended family.

In true country house style, the big front door where you can leave your coats and boots in the porch swings open on to a welcoming hall.

You have a choice of three sitting rooms, one a fun place for children with little snooker table, TV and table football, another a lovely elegant room for the grown ups with great views and French windows to throw open to the terrace, and the third a cosy room with wood burning stove in a huge fireplace.

Before dinner, gather in the atmospheric panelled bar where you can stash your bottles and mix cocktails for the group, in true Agatha Christie style.

Then dine in the big dining room with its fine views through a big bay window.

The kitchen is well equipped for catering for large groups, if you choose not to engage professional caterers, and has handy French windows to wander out for a breath of air when the pots are bubbling.

The romance continues as you head up the sweeping stairs to eight bedrooms, all en suite, then up again to seven more en suite bedrooms with the best views.

Outside you can enjoy barbecues on the terrace and twelve extensive acres of grounds, a wonderful place to wander or play hide and seek amongst the wisteria-clad verandah, trees, lawns, stream and rhododendrons.

Walk across two fields to the pebbly beach 20 yards away, where you can surf if you are experienced.

A pretty pub is located a mile stroll away, and the friendly owners who live on site are pleased to recommend the best walks around the coast and over Exmoor.

Take in the amazing top-of-the-world views from Dunkery Beacon, maybe from a pony if you'd rather save your legs.

With the most lovely area of Exmoor and its coast around the house, Porlock Vale House is a stunning destination for a memorable holiday with great company.
