“A lovely property and a warm welcome on arrival from the property owner.”

We enjoyed our stay. 2 areas which could have been improved included. 1. On day 3 we woke to find a stream of ants running across the living room to the kitchen, some ants on kitchen work surface which we'd wiped down the night before and despite using the outside bins for food waste/ recycling etc. 2. On calling the property owner ahead of our arrival I was disappointed by the phone reception from a family member (landline). When I explained the reason for my call (advised by Sykes) re arrangements for key collection. I was told rather dismissively 'it was pretty obvious. The key would be in the door'. Shortly after, I did get a call back from the property owner who was far more welcoming. Whilst we enjoyed our stay, the phone interaction with the family member meant if we were to recommend the property to others we would advise not using the landline number.

The property

In Sampford Courtenay, a detached cottage once serving as a milking parlour to the main farmhouse, with acres of lovingly landscaped garden surrounding it, all for you to wander and enjoy with care (ponds, babbling brook, wildlife), particularly if you are a gardener.

No farming now, but farmland all around and a pleasant lane walk to the excellent village pub (¼ mile).Spacious, lofty and light open-plan living/dining/kitchen (slimline dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, electric oven/hob, fridge, use of freezer) with TV/DVD, long peaceful views of the open gardens and big glazed doors to patio (table/chairs).Ground-floor double bedroom (6' bed) and lovely walk-in shower-room (suite).

From living room, stairs up to gallery (books, games, seating), through to twin bedroom (curtained from living room, 3' beds, hook for clothes-hanging).

A quiet, restful and unhurried place. Sampford Courtenay: one of the prettiest villages in the middle of Devon with lots of thatched cottages, masses of flowers, fine church and good food pub.

Coarse fishing, 1½ miles.

Dartmoor and Okehampton (small town, golf, tennis, indoor swimming pool, cinema), 6 miles.

Exeter, about 20, the sea (Bude, splendid beaches), 28.

About the location

SAMPFORD COURTENAY

Okehampton 2.5 miles.

Midway between Sampford Courtenay, a sleepy but picturesque Devon village, and Okehampton, a thriving community known as ‘the gateway to the moor’. The whole area is a country lover’s dream. The high tors of northern Dartmoor dominate the scenery and provide a splendid backdrop to Okehampton nestling in a valley where tumbling moorland rivers join before heading to the sea. For miles around, the area is famous for its country pubs that between them provide welcome rest after a day exploring the paths, cycle ways and stunning countryside. On a clear day the view from the top of High Willhays (the highest point south of the Pennines) will take your breath away. Country pursuits and crafts are a way of life and a trip to the Dartmoor Visitor Centre and country museum in Okehampton are musts. Look also at the pretty moorland villages of Chagford, Belstone and Sticklepath to savour a way of life that’s becoming increasingly rare.

Note: £10 payable for a second dog
