“This is an older property with so much character and history to it.”

It's proximity to Glastonbury, it's wonderful views, it's warm kitchen, massive dining room, big bedrooms and comfy lounge area were great for a group of 13. Not to mention the piano room with two pianos. We loved every second of our stay there.

The property

Wootton House is a fine country house on the edge of Butleigh Wootton, overlooked by the monument of Admiral Sir Samuel Hood high on Polden Ridge.

The house has evolved since its construction in the 18th century for the Hood family.

It sits on a 1,000 acre estate comprising gardens, woods, parkland and working farms.

Large mature garden (all yours) with croquet lawn, hard tennis court, climbing frames, slides and swings. The house is comfortable, elegant, delightful - if a little frayed around the edges - with modern facilities.

Downstairs: large front hall (wood floors, oak panelling) and equally large back hall (Steinway grand piano and upright piano) with French windows to paved terrace and the garden (table/chairs).

Off the front hall, with views across parkland to the monument, step down to drawing room (open fire) with damask wallpaper and French windows to the front garden, and a sitting room (marble open fireplace, fine paintings, TV/DVD).At the back, overlooking the garden, large formal dining room (long oak dining table, enormous Jacobean-style ornamental fireplace); large kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, terrazzo flooring, 4-door Aga plus electric cooker, farmhouse table/chairs, TV, door to garden) and pantry (washing machine, tumble drier, larder fridge, sink).

Partially adjoining the kitchen, but completely private from the house, is a tenant-occupied cottage.

From the back hall, passage to French windows to the rear garden, a downstairs bathroom (suite) and step up to the AbbotÂ’s Room (an enormous games room with table tennis, children's snooker table, darts, TV, PlayStation 2).Upstairs: oak stairs from the front hall up to a landing (original William Morris wallpaper, library area with window seats), off which are eight bedrooms: - double with en suite bathroom (suite)- double with hand-carved mahogany four-poster (5') with beautiful drapes- double with four-poster (6')- double- twin (zip-linkable to 6' double) with en suite shower-room (suite)- twin (2'6" beds zip-linkable to 5' double)- twin (washbasin)- twin (washbasin)Two bathrooms (suites, one with roll-top bath) and shower-room (shower, washbasin, WC).

About the location

BUTLEIGH WOOTTON

A rural village nestling at the head of the dreamy Somerset levels. Lush green meadows, meandering rivers, abundant wildlife all surrounded by steep and wooded hills; the countryside doesn't come much better than this! Just 7 miles away, Glastonbury Abbey and Tor is famous for its pre-history, Ley lines and music festival. The majestic Wells Cathedral is also well worth a visit, and shopaholics are excellently catered for in Street. Further afield, the Regency City of Bath, Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge are all an easy drive away. Overall, an outstandingly beautiful and easily accessible area with much to do and see.
