“I was concerned about parking outside the cottage but it was ok, and some very large vehicles went past with no problem.”

I don't know what I was doing wrong but couldn't get the door open when I came back from shopping and was very stressed about no mobile phone signal. My son did a video call on whatsapp to try and help, then two passing good samaritans opened the door for me. I had no problem subsequently.

The property

Just 150 yards from the pub and shop in Ilsington and for centuries the village forge, the prettiest of thatched, detached cottages with a sunny little enclosed garden (table/chairs, bench and bicycle store) looking to the neighbouring church (bells Sunday mornings/Wednesday evenings). Inside, comfortable and welcoming with good-sized rooms, polished wood floors (rugs) and, from upstairs (high apex beams, Velux windows/sloping eaves), pretty countryside/church views.

Terracotta-tiled entrance lobby (space for coats/boots) to comfy living room (Smart TV/PVR) with 'living flame' gas stove.

Kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, fridge, induction hob/electric oven, Bluetooth stereo).

Ground-floor double bedroom.

Two smart shower-rooms (suites) with tiled floors.

Rear porch/utility (washing machine, freezer) with stable doors to garden.

Upstairs (steep narrow stairs, rope rail), making the most of the lofty eaves space and the views, a double bedroom and a room with two singles (both doors/lintels approx. 6' x 2').

No children under 6, except pre-crawling babies, due to steep stairs.

A 'chocolate box' cottage in a friendly village location, an excellent base for wonderful walks and cycle rides.

Ilsington: pretty little village (church, shop, good food pub) on Dartmoor's farmed and wooded south-eastern slopes, through which flows the River Lemon to Teignmouth, its ancient wooded valley a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and habitat for woodland birds and butterflies. Tennis courts, a small skate park and children's play area are a 10 minute walk away.

Golf is available at Stover and Bovey Tracey, both 4 miles away, horse riding 6 miles away at Shilstone Rocks and there is also an outdoor heated pool at Bovey Tracey.

The historic towns and villages of Ashburton, Bovey Tracey and Widecombe in the Moor are all within a 15 minute drive, offering a huge choice of cafes, pubs, restaurants and local amenities. Just two miles away from the famous Haytor Rocks, this is wonderful unspoiled cycling and walking country
