Welcome to Charmouth

This large old coastal village of Charmouth is built into the side of a steep hill which slopes down to the sea and a long beach of sand and pebbles, described by Jane Austen as ‘the happiest spot for watching the flow of the tide… or sitting in unwearied contemplation’.

This is the 'Jurassic Coast', a World Heritage Site famous for fossils, which has been popular with fossil hunters since a local girl discovered the first complete Ichthyosaurus here in 1811. A walk along the coast brings you to Golden Cap with its fabulous views, and inland is the peace of beautiful, wooded country. The village has good pubs and restaurants and elegant Regency houses.

They certainly lived up to their name, they were EXTREMELY HELPFUL.
