This is Cornwall at its warmest, most sheltered: creeks and tidal waters deep in woods, silent except for birdsong. Wonderful visitable gardens, such as Trelissick, Glendurgan and the Lost Gardens of Heligan, grow magnificent magnolia, rhododendron and camellia and plants that live nowhere else outdoors in England. Sailing boats are everywhere decorating the sea and harbour villages where the light is Mediterranean dazzle in the sunshine. Truro, with its 20th century cathedral, is Cornwall's small capital, Falmouth is full of life, a resort and port with the National Maritime Museum. Good sandy beaches can be found around Veryan, Portscatho, St Mawes, Falmouth and the Helford River mouth.
