The Penwith peninsula: a wild land, but much inhabited since long, long ago, and very beautiful in its wildness. It feels like an island, a different world of deep blue sea, terrific cliffs and headlands, lighthouses, ruined tin-mine buildings spectacularly sited, high-walled fishing harbours, coves with little beaches, a few huge sandy beaches and the Minack Theatre built into cliffs. Inland are farms and moorland hills, prehistoric remains and granite villages. All this and the special light brings artists, especially to St Ives. All around the peninsula goes the Coast Path, of course - one of the very best stretches of it.
