A mellow landscape of lush water-meadows, golden-stone villages, luxuriant cottage gardens and apple orchards. Here is some of the richest farmland in England, wonderfully peaceful and unspoiled. To the south almost every village is picture-perfect with stone cottages, old pubs and splendid churches and magnificent visitable houses and gardens. The Quantocks wooded, heather-topped hills stretch from Taunton, Somerset’s capital, to big sandcastling beaches by the Bristol Channel sea. The deep romantic valleys and rose-clad cottages inspired Wordsworth and Coleridge, and the hills are superb for walking, riding and tremendous views. Along the western foot of the Quantocks chugs the scenic steam railway.
