Burgh Island is a tidal island located roughly 250 metres out from the mainland of Bigbury-on-Sea. The island is famous for its 700 year old pub, art deco inspired hotel and links to Agatha Christie. To enjoy a break in this great location take a look at our cottages near Burgh Island.

Why book a cottage near Burgh Island?

Burgh Island has a rich history that is well worth exploring. A monastery is believed to have been on the island since before the record of St Michael’s Chapel existed in 1411. The remains of the monastery are thought to lie under the foundations of the current hotel. The Pilchard Inn, a small, cosy pub, may well have started life as lodgings for the monks who lived on the island.

The Burgh Island hotel, built in 1929, is a wonderful example of art deco architecture and the hotel has been lovingly restored over the years. Many famous faces have stayed here over the years including Winston Churchill, Noel Coward and Agatha Christie. Not only did Agatha Christie write two of her novels while staying at the hotel but Burgh Island also forms the inspiration for the locations in Evil Under the Sun and And Then There Were None.

With it being a tidal island, access to Burgh Island can be limited. Walk across at low tide via the causeway or ride the iconic sea tractor if the water gets too deep!

Places to visit near Burgh Island

Travel east down the coast to Hope Cove, a picturesque village with thatched cottages and beautiful, sandy beaches. Continue east and you will find the fishing village of Salcombe, famous for its fresh fish and seafood restaurants.
