“We have stayed here over 14 times.”

The property is becoming tired and unloved. Stains on ceilings plaster coming off walls over the floor in lounge and main bedroom. Lack of water pressure in cottage baths and showers difficult as is washing machine which also has dodgy door. Shippon padlocked so no access to any washing machines nor could I get to electrics when power outed many times. Phone not working couldn't contact caretaker spiders and cobwebs in most corners. Mould around many windows stained wood in hall and en suite and lounge. Broken soap dish in shippon bathroom. Filthy fire extinguisher. Out of date PAT test. Chairs with little padding are uncomfortable both log baskets have significant holes burnt ceiling from spotlight lounge. Bathroom "part re tiled" old mismatched tiles still present. Rusty metal heater bathroom. Broken night store heater. Rusty bin bathroom. It's never been perfect and I understand that with a house of that age. In the past we have put up with broken boiler Internet mice piano delivery roof thatchers etc and never complained as we all work in the industry and experience issues but most of this could be delt with so easily. Most annoyingly being banned previously for the woman' on the horse and HER dogs defecating in the yard! We really don't feel that £1700 is a good price for the property it's the most we have paid and the house and facilities are way less than our previous experiences. I have photos of most of the issues should the owner like to see them. I understand management remotely is difficult. I have not shared on social media and look forward to a response.

“This is a wonderful old property and we loved the house…BUT… the plumbing/water supply is appalling.”

Having held the shower head closely to myself to get wet in the first place, applied shower gel, the water decided to stop completely, I was left unable to rinse off! The loo cistern didn’t fill up in one loo (presumably there was a tap on elsewhere) so no flush for a no 2! The bidet hot tap drips continuously (awful waste of water and is this affecting the whole water supply to the rest of the house). The favoured shower was the downstairs one by the football table, this was the best of a bad bunch. Please do something to boost the water supply, Hole Farm is almost unrentable as it is.

“We had a lovely time in this amazing property.”

However there are some things it would have been nice to know in advance. One expects old houses to be uneven and have sloping floors, and this is part of their charm, but I consider the stairs in this house to be extreme. One member of our party was never going to get up them! The house feels like 'a work in progress' with furnishings and equipment having been randomly brought in from various sources. There was plenty of cooking equipment - for use on the aga! - but a slight lack of crockery, some of which has seen better days and which I would have sent back had it been used in a restaurant. There were 7 in our party. There are 10 chairs in the kitchen, 8 in the sitting room. The cottage, with 2 bedrooms, has 1 x 2 seater sofa, 1 dining chair and 2 small stools. The main garden has 6 chairs. Water pressure is non-existent. Had we been a group of 12, as originally planned, I think that we would have struggled. It is fairly close to Chagford but this is not a pleasant evening stroll to the pub because it is through small lanes and, of course, dark when returning. The housekeeper confirmed that things such as loo rolls, cleaning materials and condiments are available in the house - useful to know when catering. Overall, I repeat, we had a very enjoyable week but I would think very carefully about the party I was travelling with before booking this property again.

This is a family property which has evolved over time and as such there is a mix of furniture and a kind of style that reflects this - we think it makes guests feel at home if the property has a relaxed style. “As soon as we turned in through the gateway we knew that Hole Farm was a very special place.”

Finding the key and exploring the wonderful house and gardens was amazing fun for everyone who came. The cottage worked perfectly for the family with 2 dogs. We played games for a week and loved cooking together in the wonderful kitchen. Chagford is such a friendly place and even has a swimming pool. 100% vote to come again. We adored it. Thank you

“This property is very old and so the stairs and floors are not even and some stairs steep , but this is all part of its charm.”

I found there was a piano in the study and would have bought music to play if I had known! It added to the holiday. (If it could be tuned please.) We had all the family and enjoyed the peace and quiet of being at Hole Farm. The gardens are beautiful and having games to play was very thoughtful.(croquet) Flowers in vases to greet us were lovely. Most enjoyable and more than we expected, a real home for us and the annexe was very good . Thankyou to the owners. Thankyou so much

“Dishcombe is an absolutely wonderful cottage and one of our favourites in Devon.”

Caroline and Luke are fantastic hosts. The cottage is perfectly located with easy access to hiking trails and shops and pubs. The kitchen is an absolute joy to cook in and the cottage is spotless and well laid out. Most importantly, the beds are extremely comfortable so you get a proper rest on your holiday. “The improvements I would like to see would be a couple of dedicated cupboards in the kitchen for food storage, as the shelves are inadequate and make the place look untidy.”

There was also no TV in the cottage, and the one in the main living room is rather small for a large group of people.

The whole (extended) family were bowled over by the property and location. It was a rare privilege to spend a holiday in such an interesting historic house - in fact we enjoyed an entire evening going through the Grade 1 listing description online trying to unpick the fascinating development of the building. The 'Dartmoor longhouse' will always have a special meaning for us. We all loved the garden too and when the caretakers arrived with baby lambs on our last morning it just confirmed we were experiencing a much appreciated dream holiday!

“The cottages were fantastic.”

The weather was warm for mid October so we didn't light the fire which we had been looking forward to. Chagford is a beautiful village with shops, pubs and restaurants. It was a pity that the lanes aren't good for walking at night , about 1.5 miles.

“When i phoned to say that we were to arrive a day late and left phone number etc no one contacted me.”

throughout the fortnight we had no contact with anyone from Sykes. we had expected clean sheets and towels for the second week but no one turned up. on the plus side someone did turn up to cut the grass! The crockery provided was poor and there was barely enough of it particularly glasses and mugs. considering the rent being charged clean sheets and towels and comprehensive crockery is not unreasonable

Please accept our apologies for the misunderstanding over the mid-stay linen change, we understand that the housekeeper did try to get in touch with you during your stay to arrange this. We would have been more than willing to change the sheets, and in non-Covid times do some additional cleaning on the changeover day. Hopefully, this can be rectified with a little more thought on our part as to where contact numbers are left. With a popular property such as Hole Farm it is easy for the cutlery and crockery to become scarce as this happens on a gradual basis - one or two things every week. “Hole Farm is an unique property, and we have stayed there many times before.”

After a 10 year absence the only changes have been to soft furnishings and the kitchen layout, the house remains as true as possible to its medieval origins and we love it. The only bad thing is that it is now solidly booked until the autumn, preventing us returning for another week. One minor thing - we couldn't find kitchen scales anywhere, which led to a family bonding exercise in the design of a Heath Robinson contraption using pivots, which was fun but perhaps not very accurate. Otherwise everything you can imagine is available onsite, including bats.

“Amazing Grade 1 property with original features going back to the XVII century.”

This property does not offer only an amazing location, plenty of space and a large garden, but the opportunity to stay in a truly historical building. We are experienced worldwide travellers and always looking for accommodations that offer unique experiences, and this was perfect to impress my kids (!)We have visited Chagford (6min drive), walked through the Daartmoor National Park (20min drive) and even taken a trip to the seaside (Teighmough is less than 1 hour away). My family has enjoyed the evenings playing board games (from the many available in the house)by the enormous chimney. Being an old farm the building can be a bit cold so wrap up and set the fire with the provider logs when coming back from your day trip to enjoy the evening. The kitchen is amazing, with the large AGA cooker and all sort of cooking utensils, more that we would normally use during holidays :-)’’

Enjoyed reading the family history and Scott family tree. Quite remote location so some negotiating very narrow country lanes required. Felt very safe in social distancing times and loved wandering around nearby Chagford which is a 2 mile scenic walk. Also quite centrally located in beautiful Dartmoor to explore and visit the coast.

The kitchen was superbly equipped and the caretakers were incredibly discreet, but terribly helpful if needed. This historic farmhouse was perfect for us for a wonderful rural retreat, totally private and very spacious.

“Superb property & absolutely well equipped for a family visit.”

We loved everything about every room and the modern bathrooms but most of all the kitchen, especially the Ago oven ! The cottage was great for Grandma, as she had her own room and a modern bathroom. Would recommend it to anyone who was having a large/mixed age family gathering. The Caretaker Rosie and her team were well organised and made our stay a holiday to remember. Stunning location and the local people in Chagford were all so friendly and helpful. Easy access to visit places and Dartford is such an unique place. We would book this fabulous farm again.

“Very authentic experience bringing you back in time.”

Solid comfort with a constant fire burning in the Aga stove made the kitchen center of the house as in old times. Pots, pans and washing machines all in place for a big family. That the farm is a restoration work in progress doesn't make the experience less authentic. For people loving country life style. A marked footpath to Meldon Common would increase value.

The property

2 miles from Chagford, a mile from the open moor, a thatched, detached, Grade I listed, medieval Dartmoor longhouse, stone mullion-windowed, full of history.

The Civil War was fought through it, Roundheads were besieged in the kitchen.

It is set in its own clean, private courtyard of listed farm barns in front, (no farm animals are kept around the property), with large, mainly lawned garden behind with patio (table/chairs), orchard and swing in adjacent field; 130 acres of farmland surround it.

Medieval threshing barn (45' x 15', unheated) in courtyard available for parties/activities, by arrangement (extra; large gazebo also available).

Inside, full of character.

Porch; thick oak door to central passage, off which utility room (washing machine, two tumble driers, fridge-freezer) with loo; bathroom (bath plus hand-shower, washbasin).

Living room with huge inglenook open fire, oak floors, beams, window seat, terrific ancient screen panelling, TV/DVD; study with jigsaw puzzle table and a finely tuned piano; 4 uneven steps up to large kitchen/dining room with brick floor, modern electric Aga (low heat May to October), dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer, refectory table seating 10, window seat, stone mullion window.

Two sets of steep, uneven stairs from the living room up to four wood-floored (rugs), white-walled bedrooms (all beds with footboards).

First set of stairs (bottom door) up to small corridor, 3 steep steps and 4'10" lintel into the master double (6' carved oak bed, limited clothes-hanging space) with 3 steps down to en-suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath, bidet, separate loo), and a twin which leads through to another twin; family bathroom (shower over bath).

Second set of spiral stairs (bottom door, rope rail) from living room up to a double (6' sleigh bed, limited clothes-hanging space) with en-suite WC.

Within the courtyard the separate cottage has stable doors to kitchen/dining room (washer-drier, fridge, gas hob/electric oven), beamed living room (wood burner) with window seat and door to courtyard, and open tread stairs up to two bedrooms - a double, and a twin (washbasin); family bathroom (sits deep bath with shower over, WC and basin).

The rear garden where the property is tucked into the hillside can be steep and has drops, so keep an eye on the children.There is a massive lawn for croquet and ball games.

A truly marvellous place. Chagford: lively, friendly little town (pubs, shops, outdoor swimming pool, tennis) away from main roads in the shelter of high Dartmoor.

Past it the River Teign (fishing) hurries through woods and meadows below Castle Drogo (National Trust).

Excellent walking; superb views, open moor, 2 miles; golf, 3, Exeter (city amenities), 17, sea/beaches, about 20.

About the location

CHAGFORD

Okehampton 12 miles; Exeter 21 miles.

A picturesque town at the northern point of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. Chagford, one of the five Stannary towns of Dartmoor, is small in size but is packed with amenities and things to do. There is a wide range of shops as well as four pubs. Chagford also has more active facilities such as public tennis court and an open-air swimming pool to enjoy at your leisure. It is a town of great history, home to the Three Crowns Hotel which dates back to the 1200's. Chagford is well known for its culture, hosting film, literary and music festivals in the town as well as an annual running race, known as Two Hills Race. Just over 21 miles away is the bustling, beautiful city of Exeter for a different kind of break, definitely worth a visit. The charming, attractive town of Okehampton sits just 12 miles away.
