“The cottage was beautifully clean and well equipped, however our stay was considerably marred by the appalling noise from the pub and social club!”

We were kept awake until after 1am first with live music and then a group of youngsters playing strip marbles and shouting outside our bedroom window and as our bed (the first floor double) was very uncomfortable and the outside lights from the pub did not go out until 2am and the curtains let in all the light, it did not make for a happy night! Sykes, please don't say "Pub less than a mile away" say "next door, with live music until 11pm" Double bedrooms also very "snug" so makes dressing and moving about very awkward, not a problem per se but needs mentioning in the bumph. Altogether a disappointing and very expensive night!

Thank you for your feedback. We are very pleased that you found the cottage beautifully clean and well equipped, though we are sorry that aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. As a small holiday cottage rather than a hotel or Airbnb-style nightly accommodation, we would note that most of our bookings are for long weekends or full weeks. Your stay was for a single night over a Bank Holiday weekend, when nightly rates are naturally proportionally higher despite guests still having exclusive use of an entire cottage sleeping up to five people. Regarding the noise, we are unfortunately unable to control activity within the village itself. The cottage is situated in a genuine living Cornish village, which many guests specifically value for its authenticity and community atmosphere, rather than in one of the more tourist-focused locations where few local residents remain. On Bank Holiday Saturday evenings particularly, villagers do often gather on the green and at the pub for music, conversation and socialising. We do also make every effort to ensure the location is represented accurately prior to booking. The photos on the website clearly show the cottage’s close proximity to the village pub and green, which many guests consider one of its most convenient and charming features. That said, we do try to help minimise any disturbance for guests. All bedroom windows are fitted with blackout roller blinds, and complimentary earplugs are provided in the kitchen drawer should guests wish to use them. The proximity to the village pub and green can occasionally mean some evening noise, particularly during holiday weekends. Had you been staying for a longer period, as most guests do, you would likely have found the village considerably quieter from Sunday evening onwards and throughout the week. We are also sorry that you found the beds uncomfortable and the double bedrooms snug. Following previous guest feedback, we recently upgraded the top bedroom to a king-size bed, which inevitably reduces the available floor space somewhat. The mattress there is brand new, while the first-floor bedroom also contains a king-size zip-and-link bed to allow flexibility for families and guests preferring twin accommodation. Mattress comfort is, of course, highly subjective, and while many guests comment positively on the beds, we appreciate that preferences do vary. We do appreciate your comments, as feedback helps us continue improving both the cottage and the information we provide to guests before booking. Property Owner

The property

In Calstock, conveniently in the hub of village life (two pubs, cafe and river within yards), a smart attached cottage with lovely, long, elevated views up and down stream from the first-floor roof terrace (table/chairs) and upper floors.

At the side, enclosed courtyard (barbecue); at the front, a sunny little paved area (bench) looking over the green (occasional activities/open-air performances) to the river. Bright, modern kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, fridge, electric range-style cooker with double oven) with smart cream units, tiled floor; utility room (washing machine, fridge-freezer, downstairs loo) and hall (tumble drier in cupboard) with door to courtyard.

Cosy, comfy living room with woodburner, TV/DVD/PVR and MP3 player.

On the first floor (stairgates), a double bedroom (5' zip-linked bed or 2'6" twin), and a single bedroom with doors to roof terrace; bathroom (suite, shower over bath).

Top-floor double bedroom with en suite shower-room (suite) and doors to little balcony (table/stools, superb panoramic views, binoculars provided).

Limited clothes-hanging space in double bedrooms.

Pets permitted in kitchen/hall only.

A picturesque and convenient spot for observing and enjoying village and river activity. Calstock: time-forgotten village (two pubs, shop, single track railway station) on the wooded Cornish side of the River Tamar; footpath to Cotehele House (Nat Trust), 1 mile.

Fun canoeing expeditions.

About the location

CALSTOCK

Gunnislake 3 miles; Tavistock 8 miles.

Calstock is a village in Cornwall, although it stands on the meandering River Tamar close to the Devon border and is dominated by the spectacular Calstock Viaduct, a giant 11-arched structure that still carries the railway line above the River Tamar along the picturesque branch line down to Plymouth. Calstock has been an important quay for centuries, transporting tin, copper and granite out of this important mining area downstream to Plymouth Docks. Today Calstock is a quiet village with a vibrant arts centre attracting musicians and artists from around Cornwall. A mile downstream brings you to Cotehele, a well-preserved medieval National Trust house with glorious gardens sweeping down to the River Tamar. Upstream from Calstock is Morwellham Quay, another important river port and now a living history tourist attraction where visitors can explore a copper mine by taking a train deep underground, admire the working Victorian farm or just quietly enjoy the beautiful Tamar Valley wildlife.
