5 Burgh Island Causeway

Great apartment with a fantastic view of the beach and Burgh Island from the really comfortable and light and airy lounge and the large deck.

I chose this apartment because of the online photos of the view from the apt and it exceeded my already high expectations. Wooden deck is large enough for 6-seat dining table, chairs and loungers, and barbecue. Very well equipped kitchen and another dining table inside. Apt is perched right above the beach and perfect for watching the tides meet as they come in either side of the island, with the famous hotel as the perfect backdrop. If I return will definitely book this apt again.

Views are wonderful.Apartment en suites modern and great but rest a bit sad and in need of a good scrub.Bedrooms had a bit of a musty smell and outdoor space had not been sorted so cushions etc we needed from shed cobwebby and glass panels looking out to see covered in bird droppings.That said we had a great break and would return but perhaps to a different apartment.

Complementary cream tea, wonderful touch

We were a group of 15 coming together to celebrate my birthday and booked three apartments - one for 6, one for 5, one for 4 -.

This one on the ground floor with its large terrace was chosen as our main gathering place. Out of the three this one felt the most homely and definitely the most welcoming. The generosity of the owner was commendable. Everything that one may have needed upon arrival was there from coffee, tea, milk, sugar, condiments etc. to beach towels (not provided by the other 2 apartments) plus a wonderful welcome pack including Devon fudge, biscuits and an array of mementoes (picture book, tote bag, postcards, maps, bookmarks and more). a cream tea for 6 was also delivered on the day of our choice, beautifully presented, plentiful and delicious. when we entered the apartment there was also a large box of chocolates, a bottle of wine and a birthday card for me. the next day the leisure club manager delivered a huge birthday cake. I felt totally spoilt an i must mention the endless and useful help provided b the lady who cleans the apartment, who met me on arrival and showed me how everything worked. The one thing which was not really suitable was the sleeping for 6 as this consisted of a double and twin bedroom as in the other two apartments, but a double sofa bed in the living room. one cannot expect two unrelated, albeit friends, adults to share a bed let alone a sofa bed taking over the whole of the living space. This may have been mentioned in the listing but at the time of booking we were only looking at the sleeping numbers and this apartment was the one we found for six. Probably two normal sofas would suit better this situation.The bathrooms appeared brand new and were superb. However there is no light switch in the twin jack and jill which means that one has to go intto the corridor anyway to switch the light on defeating the purpose of a door between the bedroom and its bathroom. If I return in the future, i would most likely select this particular apartment again.

Excellent apartment in fabulous location.

The property was comfortable and was very well equipped. Bonus of Smart tv, although we were fortunate that it wasn't needed as the week was glorious, wall to wall sunshine. Owner and housekeeper were very friendly and all communications were good. Doggies were welcomed too. Would not hesitate to return.

Another fantastic week in our special place, weather came good with 5 days of glorious sunshine, fantastic food and wine in the terrace bar, simply the best patio view in all of Devon.

Been here quite a few years now as it is the perfect location and already booked again for next year.

Unfortunately movable umbrella stand rotted away and wardrobe doors in second bedroom would not open properly but that does not take away how everything else in the apartment is so well equiped and spotless. Also the welcome pack and cream tea are an added bonus. Would highly recommend. Sitting on the terrace is like being on a cruise ship when the tide is in and when out like being on beach without sand in your sandwiches. My perfect place to stay.

Needs a new kitchen.

The flat was a perfect size for 4 adults.

There was a tasty welcome pack on our arrival plus extra kitchen and toilet rolls. Very useful. We were also given a cream tea for 4 which was delicious and delivered to our door. The main lounge was very spacious with open plan kitchen and dining area. Lots of utensils and crockery. Large tv etc. The beds, we all agreed, were very comfy. Outside a very large balcony overlooking the sea, sand and beautiful Burgh Island. This has been such a wonderful holiday. Being able to go for a swim in the lovely pool and sit in the jacuzzi, what more could you want. Only to be able to return again soon.

This was my 5th visit to number 5 and the first since the pandemic.

As always from walking in until leaving it was a holiday that was comfortable, relaxing and everything needed to recoup. The apartment has such a wonderful vista and on the Sunday we experienced an amazing storm, my favourite time to be by the sea. There are a couple of things in the apartment that need attention. The fridge freezer isn’t very clean and the freezer is quite iced up. The electric socket closet to the patio door left hand side blew when I plugged in my laptop. The apartment wasn’t as clean as it used to be and the cupboards in the kitchen needed tidying before I could find equipment that I needed (I always cook). Please note these are not complaints merely observations, in my opinion the cleaning is not as good as it used to be but it is still one of my favourite self catering holiday apartments and destination.

We returned this year to Appt.

5 because we loved our stay there around this time last year. The accommodation is excellent, very comfortable and well equipped - but most of all the setting with that exceptional and stunning view over the bay to Burgh Island is beyond amazing! I love the large terrace and this year the weather has been incredible like the Med! BUT… Unfortunately, our holiday turned into a disaster as my partner was blue-lighted to hospital in Plymouth on Tuesday night with a near-fatal ruptured appendix! And subsequently rushed into surgery with 5-keyholes to remove the grumbling appendix. He’s okay now, thank God, and after a 9-hour drive we’re home and he’s recuperating in bed. Needless to say, it was the holiday from hell solely for this disastrous reason! I highly recommend Appt.5 it has everything for the perfect holiday in this beautiful location - we hope to return one day despite this trip being ruined by an unforeseen health emergency.

The apartment is in a great position with outstanding views from the large terrace.

It is very well equipped and had everything we needed while we were there. The bathrooms were spotless, the beds very comfortable and there was plenty of seating in the living room. The reason I have only given 4 stars is that in the small twin bedroom the wardrobe and shelf space is inadequate for two people. There are no drawers large enough to take adults clothes. The wardrobe doors did not slide well and the area round the bed to get to the wardrobe was very cramped. Also the chairs on the terrace are old and some need replacing. They are also not very comfortable to sit on for long. The swimming pool in the leisure club is excellent and the changing rooms were always clean. Overall I would recommend this apartment.

Back to our special place in Devon, been visiting since 2002, first time in App 5 with our family dog.

Meals on the patio with views of Burgh Island, Devon cream teas, glorious fish and chips in the Pilchard, a special holiday that the weather cannot influence. Thank you for welcoming us into your fantastic Appartment.

Very nice place to stay, what a wonderful view everyday and brilliant facilities.

Hopefully one day we can return, would recommend it.

5, never want to go home, ready to book again for next year. Idyllic setting and comfortable accommodation with everything you could need. Bathroom and en-suite recently been updated which are an improvement. Roll on next year.

Nice to see bathroom upgrades and fresh dec. Beds are super comfy too. It’s very much a home from home, so thank you to the owners for sharing it with us all. Sykes though: we felt unreasonably pressured into making a decision (which took an hour while I contacted family members) and then more pressured to pay over the phone immediately, something I tend not to do these days, given the scam landscape. It was an uncomfortable and grabbing experience for reliable repeat customers, dating back nearly 30 years now. But number 5 was lovely. X

Good communications. Very generous welcome pack on top of the usual essentials needed whilst on holiday. Really comfortable beds, which is always welcome. Great holiday destination. Happy to recommend.

Stunning location!

The apartment was perfect... comfortable, clean, warm and so well equipped. Great that four legged family members are welcome too! There were five of us for a family celebration and my teenage son rated the kingsize sofa bed as the most comfortable he's ever slept on! The apartment is light and spacious and the sea views from the open plan kitchen/living room across to Burgh Island are fabulous. The indoor pool and sauna were also a big hit. We will definitely be back.

Firstly, the setting is absolutely breathtaking with the most stunning views of Burgh Island/Hotel - listening to the waves and watching the cross-tides and ever-changing scenery was pure heaven!

No.5 is very homely, comfortable, and well-equipped with a lovely welcome pack and delicious complimentary Devon Cream Tea provided by the owner! Brian, the manager of the Club House, on site, where the food is very good with a broad range on the menu was so friendly, accommodating, and professional with everything - such a lovely guy! Our dogs loved the dog-friendly beach and the large terrace was such an added bonus! If I was to be picky the apartment could do with an update, that said, we loved it so much, we’ve booked again for next year! Finally, Highly Recommend a stay in this truly outstanding magical location… you can’t go wrong with No.5 deserving of 5-Stars

Everything was just perfect, the property was cleaned to a high standard, and we were warmly met by the cleaners.

Nothing was too much trouble. The Free Devon Cream Tea was massive and we ordered food from the cafe, again to a high standard. The week as ever here at Burgh Island Causeway went by too quickly.

The apartment was spacious and comfortable.

The decor is quite tired and dated. The bedding could do with refreshing (how old are those pillows!) Could you please get new waste bins and clearly mark them for recycling, food waste and non recycling. We ended up just putting everything in the same bin. Some hooks to hang wet suits on would also be helpful and maybe another airer as well. These are only miner points and having said all that the view from the balcony made up for it all in spades!! The pool and restaurant facilities were brilliant, our grand children spent many happy hours in the pool and we used the restaurant every day.

This is such a lovely property, thank you for sharing it with us!

Fabulous location, spacious apartment, fabulous size balcony with amazing views.

Parking easy and secure. However…… We were disappointed in cleanliness of bathrooms, kitchen and balcony. Most concerned about broken and dangerous floor tiles on either side of bathroom door threshold. Kitchen tired with plinths and oven trim falling off. Previous reviews have commented on the abundance of kitchen equipment which obviously has not been addressed, for example, 4 can openers, none of which worked. ( we bumped into the cleaner when exiting the property who commented on the note we had left with the can openers, stating that “they all worked last week”, which implied that all equipment is individually checked at the end of each rental). Listing states for 6 guests, however, although lots of crockery, no matching sets whatsoever, not even a set of 2 matching. A plethora of Information has been provided in the form of numerous ring binders and box files but majority is many years out of date. Again this has been commented on in previous reviews but not addressed.

We enjoyed a wonderful week.

The apartment was all we could have wished for, and the terrace and view made for a real treat of a holiday. The owner couldn’t have been kinder, sending information for our arrival and also treating us to the most wonderful cream tea from the leisure club. He also called us not long after we arrived to check we were happy with everything, which we certainly were…..such a gorgeous apartment, it felt like we were on holiday the moment we stepped inside and looked out at the view. The apartment is light and spacious and very well stocked with all the kitchen equipment one could need plus a good stack of books, CDs and DVDs although we didn’t turn the tv on at all….so much else to do…and watching the tide come in and out was mesmerising. A great place to stay, and our dog was very happy too with beach walks on tap and lots of activity straight from the apartment. Burgh island, the sea tractor, the pub…..all really good entertainment. No need to travel further. Thank you John, we loved your attention to detail and it made for a really good holiday.

Overall decor was dated, whilst functional.

Outside furniture needed either updating or painting/ tidying up. Shower in no 2 bathroom very small and dated. Could remove bidet and make shower bigger like some of other apartments. Curtains were dated, other have wooden blinds. Lovely large balcony though and everything clean with good number of equipment in kitchen and lounge.

This was our 20th visit to these apartments.

We particularly enjoyed the leisure club this year. The food was of the highest quality and the staff were particularly helpful and accommodating. We love the pool booking system and very much hope it is retained. We have already booked for next year.

We had a lovely stay, Bigbury on Sea and Burgh Island are magical.

The apartment is in an ideal location and you do not need any entertainment other than sitting watching the sea come in & out. However, the whole apartment especially the bathrooms could do with updating. It is showing its age at present.

Relaxing and very comfortable. Unique place to enjoy the beach coastal walks and changing tides.

We had a wonderful stay at apartment 5, the welcome pack, and facilities were fantastic.

Would recommend to anyone. The view was amazing and so close to the beach. We have an 18 year old dog, and he absolutely loved the holiday. Such a relaxing place. Will hopefully return again one day soon. Thank you

Superb location.

Very comfortable & warm even on the coldest week of the year. Hallway radiator caused smoke alarm to sound which we were told has happened before. Bathroom towel rail not working. These items reported to the caretakers who say the apartment is to undergo an update. We would suggest this is needed. Local information is also very out of date - recommended pubs were converted into flats years ago & others have long been closed. Less is more when it comes to the cupboards in the kitchen! Having said all that we would happily like to return after the refurbishment. Hope this is helpful!

We have stayed on two occasions this year.

Very comfortable and enjoyable. However, can I suggest that someone actually defrosts the freezer as clearly hasnt been touched and is even worse than when we visited in March of this year. The cubpoards are overflowing and it's really difficult to find anything so again a sort out wouldn't go a miss.

Cosy apartment with everything we need, super welcome back including cream tea voucher.

Stayed at the apartments about ten times in the last 20 years. My happy place and number 5 allows dogs which is fabulous for us and him. The owner goes the extra mile to ensure all is well. Nice food at the Club, indoor pool and Gunn and beach under your terrace. I’ve booked me, daughter and dog for a fortnight next year

We have had a lovely holiday again at Number 5.

The apartment was perfect. It was well equipped and clean. The setting really is fabulous. We particularly enjoyed the film collection. The on-site cafe was great and the food was better than ever. Great seafood. The cream tea and home made scones were outstanding!

I spent my 60th birthday here and had the most wonderful time. Great on-site restaurant, pool and Gym with direct access to the beach . A perfect place to stay

5, comfortable accommodation, good weather and idyllic location, could not find better. One in party has limited mobility so was able to enjoy holiday just sitting on large terrace, which overlooks beach, listening to the waves and people watching. Good choice of outside furniture so sat out all day, including eating meals. Another lovely touch was the complimentary Cream Tea. Enjoyed it so much booked again for next year.

Lovely place, so greatful we were able to take the four legged member of our family.

This property absolutely exceeded our expectations, it was gorgeous, clean, like a home from home.

It is so well equipped from the kitchen equipment to games to play and also guides for everything - so well organised. Everything was of lovely quality, the views and location are stunning and we will definitely be returning on a yearly basis this place is a pure tonic and just what the doctor ordered in terms of relaxation.

Great holiday fantastic beaches the kids loved the freedom on the beach good restaurants near bye will definitely book for next year.

No5 Burgh Island was excellent, the apartment was very clean and a fantastic location overlooking the Bigbury Causeway with easy access to the beach.

We were unable to use the Restaurant and Pool Facilities as they were closed for the duration of our stay due to staff issues. Wi-Fi was good, apartment was warm & secure. Disabled access not the best.

We had a lovely stay at the apartment, it was well equipped and tidy, perfect location with a beautiful view of Burgh Island.

You could not ask for a better spot or view! The property owner always goes above and beyond to ensure you have the best holiday experience possible. We will be back!

We had a lovely week in this fabulous apartment which had everything we needed and more.

The apartment was lovely and it was just a shame that the gym was closed although understandably due to Covid so I found time to run the costal path instead.

The bed was very comfortable and the view was wonderful from the living room. It is quite isolated but once we got supplies in it was the most amazing relaxing holiday and will definitely be going back

Lovely property.

We’d stayed at Butgh Island Causeway before so we knew it was a great location. Flat was clean and well equipped. Some lovely touches such as welcome parcel, providing beach towels and free cream tea at the club. Would have been great to use the gym/sauna but understandably shut for COVID. Will be back the next time we are in Devon.

We have stayed at different apartments at the Causeway over the last 20 years.

This was the first time we have stayed at number 5 as we wanted to take our dog - number 5 allows dogs. The apartment had everything we needed with lovely touches such as dog bowls, treats etc. We have booked for two weeks next year!

Great stay at 5 Burgh Island Causeway, such a beautiful view, so close to the Sandy beach.

Great stay with the grandchildren. Lovely owner giving us the personal touch, even a free cream tea and welcome pack thrown into the price, which was a lovely touch. Pool easy to book each day, only half hour slots due to Covid, but we had it all to ourselves, so no complaints. Would highly recommend to anyone, just book it.

I’m not sure if you have changed cleaners since our last visit but the cleanliness has dropped significantly.

The outside terrace is very dirty, it’s not been swept in months and desperately needs painting. The glass balustrade was so dirty you could barely see through it. I understand it’s a costal terrace and will get dirty quickly but all the other terraces along the row were much cleaner. Toilet seats are rickety and stained underneath. The new oven / cooker is great but the general condition of the kitchen is poor. Drawers don’t close properly / a cupboard door is hanging off. If anything there’s a little too many items, when you open the pan cupboard everything literally falls out and you can barely find anything. Bathrooms were not clean on arrival, we had to wipe over all services which were dusty. Towels provided are of poor quality, bath towels were too small so we had to use the beach towels instead. Not ideal. It’s such a shame really as our previous stay was wonderful, but these small details really have impacted our break away. We all feel the apartment just needs a little TLC, a lick of paint and some love to bring it back to its former glory. On a positive note the welcome pack was very much appreciated and the beds were really comfy with nice clean bedding.

The location is just fantastic - you walk into the sitting room every morning and are greeted with a view of Burgh Island.

Our holiday was November and we had a few stormy days and 3 really sunny warm days but all perfect for long dog walks & relaxing. The surrounding area is just stunning - including the drive down into the Bay.

We were the first to use this cottage after lockdown.

It was spotlessly clean and had a good declutter making us feel very safe as I am shielding. Everything we needed was there. It is a truly lovely holiday cottage and when I spot a gap we will be back.

Great location - but sadly the apartment had not been cleaned very well at all and detracted from the £2,200 we paid for the week - especially in light of COVID 19.

We were in Apartment 5 and our friends in Apartment 25 had a much fresher/more modern decor/facilities. 1. Matted dog hairs on the patio 2. Patio not very clean at all and the furniture very old - especially compared to the other apartments where we had friends staying in the block 3. The rugs were old/very dirty 4. Kitchen drawers (inside) dirty and greasy on outside 5. Kitchen counters greasy/stained 6. Bathtub stained and sealant yellow/orange 7. The duvet covers were old and in one room the fasteners broken so the duvet kept falling out of the cover 8. The sofa was old and uncomfortable

We have stayed in this apartment over 15 times now and it never disappoints.

The owner goes out of his way to make it special with lots of extras not often found in other holiday rentals. Bigbury-on-Sea is a very magical place and to be so close to the beach makes for a very relaxing holiday. The apartment is probably in need of some updating now to keep that high standard.

We just love this place!

We keep coming back to No 5, it's another home, such a beautiful and peaceful place and the apartment has everything we could possibly need for a real holiday. Between the beach and the leisure club there is all the entertainment we need, and once again we managed to leave the car where it stood for the week. Many thanks to John Davies for such a warm welcome, and to the staff who help to make this such a magical place!

Bathrooms and bedrooms are rather tired and need updating, otherwise the apartment provides for every need and the owner could not have been more helpful.

On our arrival, Abby could not have done more to help.

It was lovely to receive the information package directly from the Owner full of brochures.

There were also some essentials waiting for us in the Apartment which was lovely. The view from the Apartment was spectacular and it was lovely to be met by Abi and Nick whose help was greatly appreciated. We will definitely be visiting again.

We never get tired of visiting this place and the apartment is absolutely fantastic.

Apartment 5 Burgh Island Causeway provides the most perfectly located place to stay in this country I have ever known.

Not only is a gorgeous beach a few steps away, but the views from the apartment are magical. All the coast's best, sea, unique crossing tides, pristine sand, dramatic cliffs, combine to lead you into a natural high that lasts during the holiday and beyond. The Apartment is so beautifully equipped you feel immediately at home.

We always have a wonderful holiday here, it just is an amazing place, and we return home refreshed and ready for work, exams, cross pets .

...!! The aparrtment is really welcoming and comfortable, it has everything anyone could possibly need and more. Of course we have already booked for next year.

Such a brilliantly equipped property and the view is wonderful. Our first ever visit to Burgh Island... and we cannot wait to return!
