Ask the Experts – is it adequate to heat radiators and hot water with a back boiler and immersion heater?

Ask the experts…

Q. The radiators and hot water in our rural cottage are heated by a back boiler on the wood burner, and it also has an immersion tank. Is this suitable for rental purposes?

A. The Helpful Holidays team say:

A wood burner is a useful feature in a holiday cottage in the winter when the weather takes a turn for the worse and guests love the romance of a real fire, so it will help extend your booking season. Also, a log burning stove is an environmentally friendly method of heating a property, particularly if you provide local, sustainably grown firewood, so your visitors can be reassured they are helping to maintain the beauty of the local environment.

As long as the back boiler has been correctly installed to avoid overheating, the immersion reliably provides sufficient hot water for a couple of baths or showers each day, and there is a form of heating in addition to the wood burner, it should be fine to let your cottage with this system.
