Bovey Castle is considered to be one of the most prestigious hideaways in Devon, and you can clearly see why. From the moment you enter the gates and begin the mile long drive to the front of this grand hotel, you feel as though you have been transported to the royal lifestyle you deserve.

Bovey Castle has been an iconic hotel for many years, sitting proudly at the heart of Dartmoor National Park. A considerable period of growth came to the business when in 2004-2009, Bovey Castle decided to build a collection of stylish 5 star self-catering lodges within the grounds of the hotel to keep up with the demand for a more ‘home away from home’ style holiday. Once the properties were built, Bovey wanted to find a self catering cottage agency to let their properties. They came across local business, Helpful Holidays based in the nearby town of Chagford on Dartmoor. Upon further discussion, Bovey Castle realised that they shared the same ideals- “We are both committed to very high product and service levels. They (Helpful Holidays) work well with us and we both treat our letting guests as if they were hotel guests.” Said Sally Lemar, Revenue Manager at Bovey Castle.

What sort of holiday properties are on offer at Bovey Castle?

You’ll discover 6 stylish stone built lodges and a beautiful old gate house cottage to choose from: Hound Tor, Fingle Tor, Cox Tor, Haytor, Kitty Jay, Jaystone and Rose Cottage. All the properties have a slightly different layout and a contemporary style.

Rose Cottage

A quirky, detached former gatehouse situated by the main gates of Bovey Castle. Greeting visitors to the grounds, the cottage sits proudly setting the tone for any visit. Built in 1907, the Gothic inspired architecture gives way to a stylish and electric interior. Rose cottage is an unforgettable stay for those who enjoy something a little different.

The Lodges

The stone built lodges are privately situated within the grounds of the castle with views over the lake, tennis courts and across to the open moor. The stylish open plan layouts maximise the space, making them the perfect getaway for families or group bookings. When built, the lodges were ahead of their time and have since been well maintained and kept up-to-date with recent refurbishments.

Why should you stay at the Bovey Castle lodges?

By booking to stay in one of the lodges or cottage, you are entitled to all the perks a hotel guest would receive. As a self-catering guest you can still enjoy access to the pool, gym, spa, the restaurants and bars. A complimentary round of golf on the championship golf course is available for all guest over 16.There are additional experiences to try such as cider and sloe gin making, archery, rifle shooting, clay shooting, even orphan fawns to bottle feed. Where else can you try that!? 4X4 off road driving- not to mention the fawnery display, kids area and trampoline, crocket, petanque and plenty more! With facilities like this, it is safe to say Bovey Castle lodges are perfect for a family holiday.

What advice do you have for anyone who is looking to get into the self-catering letting industry?

“Do your research. Know what you want to get out of letting your property and talk to the companies available to make sure you get the right partner. Helpful Holidays are very similar to us in business. We wanted a local company. Think to yourself ‘Are you in it for the long term?’ If that’s the case, get the right partnership from the start. When we were bought by Eden Hotels we had a look round to see if there were any other holiday letting companies who could offer us anything more then Helpful Holidays. No one else could offer anything better. No better service, no better bookings, no more money, so why change? At the end of the day, it has to be a good sound business decision and we have a great relationship with Helpful Holidays.” – Sally Lemar.
