The Moor Otters Art Trail is one of our favourite Dartmoor events, available from 28th May 2021, inviting people of all ages to explore the wild and rugged landscape of beautiful Dartmoor. A natural playground, experience different parts of this enticing moorland, from Chagford to Newton Abbot, to Okehampton and Plymouth, with a fun and creative twist.
The Moor Otters Art Trail has been created to provide fun-filled days out and raise money for conservation and access projects for Dartmoor National Park.
81 beautifully painted sculptures of otters and their cubs have been decorated by local and national artists. Hidden across Dartmoor and Plymouth, as well as gateway towns and villages, all you have to do is have fun finding them this summer.
Once the Moor Otters Art Trail has come to an end, the otters will be taken down to allow the otter-spotters and art collectors a chance to bid at auction for their favourite otters to take home! The money raised from this endeavour is donated to ‘Donate for Dartmoor’, a charity that focuses on conserving and enhancing Dartmoor as a vibrant, living and working landscape and community for people to enjoy for many years.
This year, we are excited to announce that we officially have our otter ‘Teach your Children well’ otter and cub sculpture, designed by Yvonne Coomber, currently staying with us at the Helpful Holidays office while on her holidays. Pop by our office in Chagford and you will see our otter proudly sitting out front ready for visitors.
Suitable for children of all ages and abilities, you will find many of the otters stationed around many walking routes. So, don your walking boots and release your inner explorer for an ‘otterly’ fun day out!
There are six routes to choose from, all covering different areas of the Moor for you to discover, these include:
– Trail 1: This route runs between Okehampton and Tavistock
– Trail 2: Includes areas from Bovey Tracey, Haytor Vale, Ilsington to Moretenhampstead and Chagford
– Trail 3: Creates a loop from Ivybridge to Crapstone
– Trail 4: This trail can be done as a circular walk includes Bukfastleigh, Ashburton and Princetown
– Gateway Trail: Covering the gateway towns of Newton Abbot, Totnes and Bovey Tracey
– Mayflower Trail: Encompasses Plymouth and the surrounding areas
