Why visit Ashburton?
Ashburton is a small town on the south-east border of Dartmoor National Park. It is an ideal base for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities; events on offer include horse riding, climbing, canoeing, walking and cycling.
The town was one of the original stannary towns, where mined tin would be brought to be weighed and assayed. You can learn all about the history at the Ashburton Museum.
Ashburton has a number of interesting shops, and is somewhat of a haven for antique collectors. There are no fewer than ten antique shops to explore and some people even travel from abroad to find unusual and fascinating items. As well as antiques, there are also a number of galleries, book shops and excellent pubs and restaurants to eat and drink in.
Places to visit near Ashburton
Just south of Ashburton is the small market town of Buckfastleigh. The main attraction of the town is Buckfast Abbey, a Bendedictine monastery, famous for producing Buckfast Tonic Wine. Head east towards the coast and visit Newton Abbot. This beautiful town holds a number of markets during the week, showcasing local produce and arts and crafts. Other places in Dartmoor that are well heading to are Chagford and Widecombe-in-the-Moor.
