“The property was cosy and clean.”

Most of the crockery was chipped and the cutlery was sparse. The number for assistance and questions was eventually answered by the rude and unhelpful owner who essentially said this isn't my problem to everything we asked. One question was regarding safe use of the log burner and all he said was that we have to put wood in it to make it work. Very condescending and given he was in the house next door he could easily have taken a couple of minutes to show us. Sykes customer service was also ...

Sykes customer service was also unhelpful giving a generic "sorry for the inconvenience" response. We are never booking with Sykws again.

The property

Along a hedgerow lane, ½ mile from the pub at Welcombe in one direction and ½ mile from the Coast Path in the other, a detached bungalow converted from barns with the benefit of modern insulation and heating.

Gravelled driveway to front door with large, enclosed patio (table/chairs) and meadow beyond, which you are welcome to use for dog exercise or energetic ball games.

Diagonally opposite is a storage barn, occasionally used by the owner and very occasionally a tractor might trundle in front to attend to field maintenance. Door into living/dining room with woodburner (logs included) and TV/DVD.

Kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, microwave, fridge-freezer, electric cooker) with door to patio.

Two bedrooms, both with TV - a double (5' bed), and a twin with sofa bed (4'); bathroom (suite plus hand-shower and separate shower).

Sleeps maximum of 5 adults or 4 adults/2 children.

A brilliant spot for walkers, or for just a quiet escape; no light pollution; pleasant lane walk to pub or Coast Path, but remember torch! Welcombe Mouth: cove (rocks and sand at low-tide, great surfing) between spectacular cliffs in one of the most unspoilt parts of the West Country, and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Coast Path, great birdwatching.

Welcombe hamlet (community shop, good food pub, pottery), 1 mile.

Hartland (large village with shops and pubs), 10 miles; Bude, 12.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.
