Excellent property with a "Wow Factor"

My wife & I found The Old Chapel to be one of the very best of Sykes Cottages in which we have stayed.

Thoughtfully & tastefully designed interior with every appliance one could need and very comfortable furnishings throughout, we would recommend this venue unreservedly.

The Old Chapel was a very quiet, comfy and delightful place to stay.

It had everything we needed to hunker down on the wet wintry evenings we were there. A top notch place where everything has been carefully thought through to provide a high standard of modern comforts. The welcome basket was a lovely addition too. Great to be so near to Haytor and the Moor. We hope to return soon.

The old Chapel is a home from home.

It has everything you will ever need and more. The welcome pack was such a lovely thing to see, beer and the wine was much appreciated after a long drive. The bed was so comfy, the bath towels were soft and fluffy. Thank you for letting us share the old chapel with you.

Beautiful cottage set in the Dartmoor National Park, perfect in every way.

There was everything in the cottage you could need and the hosts were very helpful. Easily a 10/10 for this cottage

The Chapel was everything it said it would be comfort warmth peaceful and quirt.

Although we didn`t go far(the shop) we had all we needed at the Chapel .The sun blasting through the windows at first light clear sky`s the total tranquility, it was just the break Lynda and i needed .

The Old Chapel is an ideal property for couples seeking quiet luxury accommodation close to The Moors.

It is very well equipped and has more than enough utensils to satisfy the most demanding cooks without being overly cluttered. We found the accommodation spotless, modern and comfortable. We very much appreciated the "get you in" basket. It left us with the impression that the owners really care. We would certainly look to stay again.

An extremely comfortable and immaculately clean property with some very thoughtful little extras.

We loved the welcome basket, with lots of little treats. The interior decor was beautifully thought out and everything was high quality. The bed was very comfortable, and the underfloor heating kept us warm. It is obvious that a lot of thought had gone into making this a really lovely place for a relaxing holiday.

Fantastic accomodation.

Well equipped and to a high standard. Very spacious inside for a couple. Highly recommended. In a good location to explore the Moor and surrounding areas. Note - Narrows single track lanes to access the accomodation but only for a short distance in most directions. Not really practical to walk to the local pub or hotel as nowhere to go if a vehicle comes down the lane! Also note small outside seating area to the side of the property. Parking to the right hand side/in front of the entrance door.

An absolutely superb property.

Generous welcome basket waiting for us on arrival. Wonderfully equippped property with everyting you could possibly need for a comfortable stay in this wonderfully peaceful location on the edge of Dartmoor . Highly recommended . Recommend following owners "option B" directions to access the property . Satnav can lead you down very narrow lane with few passing places :-)

A superb holiday accommodation with quality furnishings set on the edge of Dartmoor and ideally located to explore the moors and nearby towns and villages.

The old Chapel clearly has its own charm offering its guests a cosy, comfortable and relaxing stay topped with a fantastic ‘welcome food basket’. it’s presentation is a credit to the owners and according to the “comments book” is enjoy and highly recommended by all its visitors.

Wonderful property that was beautifully appointed.

Easy to find and check-in with a parking space big enough for a 4x4. The property was very well equipped and comfortable with creature comforts such as a SmartTV and air fryer. Highly recommended.

A fantastic property, that's elegantly put together.

Perfect for my husband who is disabled with mobility issues. Also quiet and peaceful, the perfect place for our weekend away. The thoughtful extras around the property were well thought of and really appreciated, particularly the welcome basket and the monocular to enjoy the view with. I could list more but wouldn't want to spoil the surprises! A perfectly placed property for exploring dartmoor or the coast and everything in-between. One tip read the given directions and ignore your sat nav.

I loved the Cycle Ride and i loved the property. I will try and book next time for both. The only draw back is the 650 mile round trip.

We had a lovely stay at the Old Chapel.

The accomodation wanted for nothing, well equipped kitchen, comfortable lounge & TV, comfortable bed, nice bathroom with great shower, The location was great, good views across the valley and central to Dartmoor and Devon attractions. Islington is a lovely village where we made good use of the Carpenter's Arms and the Village shop.

Fully equipped , extremely clean. Owners have thought of everything including goody basket. Excellent location for visiting Dartmoor and local towns and villages. We stay at holiday cottages every year but this is the best we have ever stayed at. Your rating is based on 5 stars but would give this more.

The Old Chapel is incredible.

We stay in older properties with some history and this had history but luxury. It’s such a beautiful property that it was a proper tug to leave! Everything you could possibly need has been catered for. There is even a Ninja air fryer (2 drawer) which I have at home! I always bring my own bath sheet towel but it stayed in the suitcase as the owners provided very soft, fluffy bath sheet size towels. Luxury! The welcome basket was way, way more than you usually get. We tucked into toast with the jams and marmalade for breakfasts, and the wines (lovely) and Dartmoor Ale (fabulous). The cleanliness was 100%, whether by the owner or a cleaner, and really deserves a special mention. The neighbour is very quiet (and very friendly as a package arrived for him) and you don’t hear a thing from next door. The Smart TV is huge (thank you, thank you) and the Google speaker was handy for alarm and weather each day. The sofa… my goodness, it’s massive and so comfortable which was a joy after our walks each day. The fridge/freezer is spacious and can easily accommodate a 2 week holiday. The washing line at the rear was super handy as we had the hot weather during our week. Such a shame we never got to use the log burner but our future Christmas break and we shall use it! The bathroom with the walk in shower is stunning. I love this property, actually really love it. We do English Heritage castles/abbeys and anything Neolithic, so Ilsington is in a perfect location for exploring. The walks up to so many Tors on the moors are incredible. Ooh and we saw a stunning adder up there! We shall be back if holidaying in Devon again, and I do have my eye on it for a future short Christmas break! We loved our week in The Old Chapel, what a great place to welcome in 2025.

The conversion of the chapel has been done really well and it's such a comfortable place to stay. There were so many lovely, thoughtful touches. We enjoyed cooking in the well-equipped kitchen, as well as eating out at the Carpenter's Arms. It's great that the pub and the village shop are within walking distance. The Old Chapel is a lovely place to explore Dartmoor from, we hope to return.

The Old Chapel is a little gem.

It is a high standard property presented with thoughtfulness and a strong attention to detail. We stayed over Christmas and the cottage had been beautifully decorated by the owner. We would also recommend the local pub (the Carpenters Arms) and the village shop which were both friendly and welcoming.

This is a very comfortable and easy to use cottage and makes a perfect base for exploring the surrounding moor and tors.

The Old Chapel was truly lovely and we really enjoyed our week there.

We thought it was very clean, very well kitted-out, with a very modern feel in terms of under floor heating and other facilities such as the oven and WiFi speaker. The location feels very snug, with wonderful views of the Teign estuary and star-studded skies on clear nights. The amazing village store is down the lane, as well as the Carpenters Arms which is a fantastic pub. Bovey is a 3 mile walk through lovely Devonshire lanes. You can get over to Haytor through some beautiful woodland and open moorland on foot in about an hour or so. We'd seen the chapel before it was made into a holiday cottage so we can appreciate the transformation that has taken place. Thanks to Jill and Mervyn for making the place available for those of us who love Dartmoor! 10/10.

Beautiful cottage, extremely well laid out with everything provided.

Welcome box was a lovely surprise. The cottage exceeded our expectations.

We just found the parking for our car was difficult,as only a small parking plot, but we had a lovely stay, a lovely friendly village.

Would stay again but maybe park in the park nearby

From the substantial welcome pack to the monocular to look out over Dartmoor, there little things in the property to make your stay memorable. Highly recommended.

We have just stayed a week at The Old Chapel which has fantastic accommodation and set in the middle of the countryside but a very short car ride to the village and pub (it is walkable if no mobility problems) Everything is provided to make your stay extremely comfortable and the welcome pack is excellent

Very well equipped. Perfect accommodation for a couple. There is a wonderful well stocked village shop, pub and hotel restaurant all within walking distance. A truly wonderful place to stay.

A real home from home with everything you need and the Air Fryer was a real surprise! The welcome pack was a real bonus, lots of treats which we managed to get through during our stay. With Dartmoor just along the lane and easy access to the coast makes it an ideal holiday location.

The Chapel was well equipped with a lovely welcome pack and all you could need.

We found the heating inadequate as always cold throughout, despite lighting the burner ( we use a burner at home, to great effect).

The property is finished to a very high quality and the owners have thought of everything - the little extra touches like supplying a hamper of essentials for our 1st day there until we were familiar with the local amenities was the extra mile.

Definitely worthy of 5 stars, superbly equipped and wonderfully comfortable.

At this time of year one has a nagging doubt as to whether the premises will be warm enough - with underfloor heating that doubt was removed! There is a community run shop in the village that has a good range of products including some local wine! Would I recommend the Old Chapel? Absolutely!

Clean, well maintained and cosy. Liked the rural location with good access to lots of walks. Enjoyed the local pub which was just a short walk away.

A cozy, heated and modern furnished home. We were blessed with lovely weather in December and enjoyed a walk around Islington and Liverton finished with Sunday roast at The Carpenters Arms. Highly recommend a stay at The Old Chapel.

A delightful location, very rural and the village pub a short walk away.

We found the property to have excellent layout and fittings, warming under floor heating complemented with wood burner if required King size bed and shower/ wash room. Smart TV and fast WiFi available. Highly recommended!

Lovely big bed and powerful shower. Graveyard doesn’t intrude and neither does the neighbour (details don’t make clear that this is a semi-detached property).

The Old Chapel was a wonderful property.

Perfectly situated for visiting Dartmoor including places as far away as Lydford Gorge, Fingle Bridge, Castle Drogo and also getting to the coast at Torbay and beyond. Everything in the house was top quality, with a beautiful en-suite shower room and magnificent kitchen. The owners left us a welcome pack of bread, milk and lots of goodies - a lovely thought. We had a great week at The Old Chapel and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

The renovation is excellent and the accommodation included everything you could wish for. Excellent location for walking and cycling on Dartmoor. We really enjoyed the pub too, eating there twice and having an evening drink. Gill was a perfect host! We will return!

Great accommodation with some really lovely touches and very well equipped.

Perfect if you like walking and cycling in the beautiful countryside but also great if you want to get away from it all and just chill out. With a pub and shop in the village we had everything we needed for our stay. Would definitely stay here again.

We had lovely week at The Old Chapel, everything was provided for, we slept like logs as the bed was so comfortable, fantastic views over Dartmoor for miles.

The Chapel was spotlessly clean and so quiet and peaceful, a lovely surprise by the owners for the bread,milk, marmalade, biscuits and wine that was left for us, thank you so much. Although a little challenging to locate in the first instance, it was well worth it!

In a peaceful and tranquil location, the Old Chapel is a real gem with views of the rolling hills from the main windows. The owners have decorated and maintained the property to an exceptionally high standard, which is complimented by the addition of fresh flowers in the property and welcome gift of wine, biscuits and basic essentials to help you settle in - they even thought of ice! The locals are very welcoming, with a well stocked shop and great food at the local pub, The Carpenters Arms, which is just a short walk from the property. If thinking of visiting, you won’t be disappointed.

The cottage is spacious, with a clean modern interior and fully equipped with all the essentials you need for your stay. Jill is a wonderful host, kind and empathetic to your needs. Jill left a lovely welcome for us; tea, coffee, milk, biscuits, bread and wine. It was wonderful to receive as we didn't have time to shop prior to arrival. We had a great holiday, going on very long walks and it was fantastic to come back to the cottage and rest in the comfortable bed after a day's walking. The village shop in Ilsington is very good too. We shopped there a few times during our stay and the vegetables and products are very good. Thank you Jill for providing a lovely experience. It was one of our best holidays in Dartmoor.
