    • “The Music Room was amazing! Nick and Jo are great hosts, very friendly and have set up the most comfortable and romantic place. Location is nice and secluded but still easy enough to get to places like Salcombe and Hope Cove within 20 mins by car. The weather wasn’t the best but the log fire, deep couch and projector for movies more than made up for it on a rainy night.”

    Mr Chambers, Harrogate, November 2018

    • “A wonderful place for a relaxing break. Would thoroughly recommend.”

    Mrs Godfrey, London, June 2018

    • “The music room has been by far the most interesting place to stay and the most beautiful set within a courtyard. We can’t praise Jo and Nick enough a delightful couple. The welcome pack and flowers were a very generous treat, not always given at other places we have stayed and usually only consists of a pint of milk. We would love to return to the music room, hopefully soon.”

    Mr Yarligan, Heston, May 2018

    • “An amazing room and location. Expensive but the unique nature of the space, friendly hosts and excellent facilities certainly make it worthwhile. Perfect for a quiet getaway.”

Mr Tong, Kingston Upon Thames, December 2018

The Property

A mile from Aveton Gifford, 300 yards down a tree-lined track off a lane, three very special places to stay within handsome former farm buildings: an airy converted barn (L248), a barn converted into a gallery (L191) overlooking meadows and a remarkable Grade II listed former music room (L249). A large, pretty, enclosed suntrap courtyard is shared with the friendly owners. Just outside the courtyard, a lawned walled garden (also enclosed) with camellias, fig and walnut trees, leading to another garden with pond (unfenced) and 6 grassy acres with big wildlife pond (fenced), vast lawn for picnics and croquet, picnic table, benches (terrific long views) and big trees to sit under, inviting you to rest, read or just enjoy the silence and let your mind wander (children should be supervised). Heating by biomass boiler using wood from local, sustainable woodland. Spring water. Arrival after 4pm. A peaceful, curative oasis, good for ‘taking it easy’ The Music Room is magnificent: detached, huge and wonderfully romantic, once home to concerts and recitals. Three steps up into open-plan living/dining/kitchen (46' x 19') with vaulted stucco ceiling, four massive arched windows with stained glass border the length of the room generating light and colour, wood floor (rugs), woodburner, TV/DVD/Blu-ray home cinema projector with surround sound, piano, iPod dock; smart kitchen area (dishwasher, microwave, fridge, electric oven/induction hob, espresso coffee maker); step up to bathroom (suite, 4' bath with shower over). The bedroom is the stage (3 steps up) with 5' four-poster bed, stunningly presented and lit. No children, except pre-crawling babies. A stunning and extraordinary place to escape to, any time.

Aveton Gifford: old village (pub, PO/shop) beside the River Avon where it becomes tidal. Within 5 or 6 miles are several villages (Bigbury, Bantham, Thurlestone) on an excellent and varied stretch of coast: sandy beaches, coves, cliffs, golf courses, the Avon estuary (fishing, birds), pretty thatched-cottage village centres. Kingsbridge, 4 miles.
