Description

Above the village road in Downderry, with fabulous sea views from most windows, a Victorian captain’s solidly built, mid-terrace house. From the road, 9 steps up to paved sun terrace (table/chairs, barbecue) and verandah (alternative access without steps to utility room from communal courtyard at the back). Inside, generously proportioned and renovated in traditional style with polished wood floors and muted colours: all very welcoming. The house is taller than it is wide and spread over four floors, with the living room on the second floor to take full advantage of the tremendous sea views. Hall, off which dining room (piano, iPod dock) with French windows to verandah and terrace. Hand-built kitchen (microwave, fridge-freezer, range-style electric cooker); scullery/utility room (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, larder fridge) with step up to shower-room (suite) and plenty of space for sandy buckets, wetsuits and boots. Stairs up to first floor and three bedrooms - a double (5' sleigh bed), a twin, and a room with 3' bunks (best suited for children and teenagers, no clothes-hanging space); bathroom (suite with separate shower). Further stairs up to second floor and large living room with open fire, TV/DVD and views. Snug with second TV/DVD and stairs up directly into a large double bedroom (6' bed) under the eaves on the third floor with the best views of all from a dormer window and en suite shower-room (suite). Arrival after 4pm. A grand base for coastal living, from days in the sun to storm-watching in the winter.

All good.

Refuse instructions need updating - bin colors, bag colors, recycling instructions don't match up. But apart from that all good.

The House is exactly as described, very cosy, clean and well maintained.

We loved the fantastic sea view and spent most of the time on the terrace enjoying it. But: The main picture and the description of the place implies a certain quietness, which is not the case. We were there at peak season, and there is a lot of traffic directly in front of the terrace. Especially at night people don't care for the 20 mph speed limit. And there is no parasol or other sunshade. The porch roof is not sufficient for a late breakfast on the terrace with 6 people. We had to improvise an awning with some cloth and ropes we brought with us.

A delightful multi-generational space.

We were enchanted with the property and loved all the spaces, as they worked well for our family. It was great to have a utility room with washing machine, dryer and space to dry our washing and swimming costumes. We enjoyed family games in the sitting room. We were blessed with glorious weather and enjoyed breakfast on the terrace, which allowed us to enjoy the spectacular views across the bay. The beach at Downderry is nice and was quiet on both occasions we went and really good for the children. We walked down to Seaton beach which was ok. The community shop is a delight, great staff, and we had drinks at the Inn on the Shore, where staff were friendly. We had a takeaway from the tapas bar, which was delicious. Again, friendly staff. Not as easy to feed the children here but we’d taken food with us, so it wasn’t an issue. We were able to park easily.
