“Yes, the roads are very narrow.”

Yes, there are pot holes(live in East Sussex and you will be used to them) Yes, there is some building work going on now and again. Would it stop me booking this barn? Absolutely not! The location was perfect, so quiet(apart from the occasional digger sound) with lovely views of the countryside. If you like walking, it is right on the mariners way, so lots of walks from the door step. Because of the lanes we chose to do more walking from the barn. A walk during the day, then return to the ...

If you like walking, it is right on the mariners way, so lots of walks from the door step. Because of the lanes we chose to do more walking from the barn. A walk during the day, then return to the barn to relax, read a book, enjoy the glorious weather, make the most of the setting and to wait for visits from the Dartmoor ponies! It turned out to be one of the most relaxing holidays we have had! Loved it! Loved it! Loved it!

“Excellent accommodation in a lovely location.”

We had a wonderful stay at Lingcombe Barn and appreciated the homemade cake upon arrival. The barn is excellently designed, tastefully decorated, and well appointed with everything you need for a comfortable stay in the beautiful Dartmoor. Extremely quiet surroundings and a great view of the stars at night from the private garden area. It was delightful to have a visit from some Dartmoor ponies too! The barn was very clean and tidy, however, many high level cobwebs. We had extremely warm weather so a fan would have been a brilliant addition. Overall, an outstanding place to stay and we'll definitely return. Thank you very much.

“A beautiful and peaceful position with very comfortable and well appointed accommodation.”

Ideal for exploring Dartmoor. One suggestion is that if we’re going to have increasingly hot summers the provision of a fan and summer duvet would be a good idea. Maddy who was maintaining the property during our 4 week stay did manage to provide a summer duvet on our request.

“The interior of the cottage was excellent.”

But the outside was like living in a building Site. There were skips, old branches and a Blue Car parked just opposite the front of the house. The lounge dinner only looks out on the front and one felt one was being overlooked. The position within Dartmoor was good but the lanes are narrow, full of potholes and expect to be able to reverse your car in narrow difficult terrane

Hello Thank you for your review. We are pleased you found the interior of the cottage to be excellent. Its location on Dartmoor is remote (that’s the beauty of it) and lanes throughout Dartmoor and indeed, a lot of Devon are very narrow with limited passing places. That is the nature of rural Devon! Unfortunately, as the rest of the country know we also suffer from lack of council funding for repair of potholes. Unfortunately this is a common problem throughout the UK in all rural areas. With regard to the ‘building site’ the blue car is parked opposite our barn as our neighbour owns that land. However his farm house is much further down the track so I’m a little unsure as to why you felt overlooked. We also have a wall around the front of the barn (remnants of the old pig stye wall) so again there is a buffer. Our neighbour does unfortunately still have building work to complete, but again generally this is not in view when you are sat down in the cottage or even at the front. The main seating is also at the back of the barn with scenic views across the moor and up into the fields where the ponies and sheep graze. Apart from the odd hiker you cannot be overlooked here. The cottage is glorious and the location is superb but our neighbour is still finishing off his property. The price I believe does reflect this as the barn is very unique with such amazing access onto the moor. Hopefully we may see you return once our neighbour has finished all his work. The accommadtion was well designed, well equipped, and very comfortable, with good quality, tasteful furnishing. Lovely location, well positioned for trips out, great walks, beauitful countryside (note the roads on Dartmoor are mainly single track and full of potholes).

“Beautifully newly-furnished barn in spotless condition, and I had a lovely time thanks.”

I wouldn’t return to the barn in winter without a 4WD though - the lane was flooded the whole week I was there, and completely impassable in my normal car for a couple of days. That’s rural Dartmoor for you! Also, wifi was down and took 8 days to repair - obviously not the owner’s fault, but again a reflection of the barn’s isolation despite so close to Chagford.

Dear Guest Thank you for your 5 star review. We were pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay although it was a shame it coincided with Storm Bram hitting the South West and the Dartmoor area. Unfortunately a tree coming down took out the wifi (which you were aware of prior to your stay and had options regarding to change the dates etc). The WiFi was back working for you although any delay was due to BT's haphazard repair programme rather than the remoteness of the cottage. The lane which continues on to Hurston (past our track) can get wet but we drive a Kia Nero and we arrived the day you left with no issues. Our neighbour who lives further down the lane has her daughter visit daily in her Skoda Fabia and had no issues during that week. Sometimes the water looks maybe worse than it actually is and when you are not used to the surroundings makes it hard to guage the level of the standing water. However you obviously enjoyed your stay and you said you liked the barn so please do return when the weather is a little less wild with a little more sunshine. With best wishes. “This place is perfect if you want peace and quiet.”

The only warning I'd give is that it's very isolated and along lot of tiny country lanes. But if peace is what you seek you cannot do better than this place. It is perfect.

“This lovely conversion is a real find.”

The barn is in a gorgeous secluded location with direct access to footpath networks and the moor. The owners have obviously put a lot of consideration and care into accommodation details from the thoughtfully planned kitchen, the beautiful woodwork throughout and remarkably comfortable bed to the useful selection of walking maps and underfloor heating in the bathroom. We were only at the barn a few days but felt right at home and are already planning to return again next year

“Wonderful barn conversion cosy and warm, beautifully furnished.”

Lovely views around the barn, with pretty sitting out areas. Good walking from the door. Very rural area which we loved and didn’t find the lanes to it any problem, narrow and bumpy but go slowly and it’s fine! Nearby chagford lovely town with good pubs and amenities. We certainly will be re booking!! Loved it!

“Wow, what a beautiful cottage!”

The renovation is superb and the furnishings and finishing touches are tasteful and lovely quality. The weather wasn't kind to us for the first few days, but the barn was a cosy and comfortable space to relax in. We could tell how much it was or wasn't raining by whether we could see Kes Tor from the front door! The garden areas are perfect and you catch the sun (when it comes out!) in the different areas throughout the day. It's an ideal spot for walking as Chagford Common is on the doorstep (the double stone row is worth a visit). There's also a delightful copse with a small stream along the footpath in front of the farmhouse. The whole area is perfect for wildlife watching and is beautiful. I've seen some complaints about the lane to the property, but it's no worse than the rural lanes around where we live and you have to drive appropriately (slowly). There's a couple of barns that are being renovated just past Lingcombe Barn, but the builders are very quiet and considerate and you wouldn't know they were there. We've stayed in a lot of cottages and the quality and location of this one is one of the best. We will be back, hopefully next year.

“The Lingcombe Barn itself is a very beautiful and comfortable cottage.”

And so tastefully decorated! All things we needed were available. We felt at home from the first moment we arrived. So 10 points for everything! The only point of criticism concerns the road to the barn. Our car didn’t like the putholes in it at all.

“This cottage (once a pig sty,now a lovely well furnished and appointed cottage) is in a beautifully remote location so a car is needful to really get around unless you want to chill out in a wifi unbothered location,mostly.”

Which I did. Two caveats. It's more for couples or single like me. Maybe a baby or two toddlers if you brought your own cots/bed linen. It's not for large families. Also TAXIS are rare as hens teeth in that locality but I can recommend Chards Taxis. If you want to chill out,see unspoiled nature and walk on the moor and do not find grazing animals intimidating this place is for you.

Dear Mr Henry Thank you for your excellent review. The property is stunning and the location perfect for walking and exploring Dartmoor. Your feedback is useful about the washing machine. We did plan to put one in but then felt wondered if people would actually use it as many people stay for short breaks as well as a week. However, as the cottage would also be a great place to visit in the Winter as it has a cosy log burner I could see walkers would benefit from a washing machine particularly if they had got wet and muddy. “We had a lovely week at Lincombe Barn.”

The property is pristine, well designed and had every comfort I could have wished for. The hosts were attentive to temporary difficulties and communicated in a friendly and timely way to help us navigate these. Driving to the property was complicated and the roads are generally in poor repair, and fair warning of this was helpful. Overall a wonderful break in a truly rural and beautiful spot.

Driving to the property currently is a little complicated as the normal road you would drive down is closed due to gas works but it will be open again in April. Once the normal road is open again, finding the property is a lot easier and the lanes accessing it, in better shape. Once again, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. “Excellent property, very tastefully done, spotlessly clean every thing you could need, one little thing for me personally was the feather duvet and pillows, I always take my own Simba pillow and took a sheet and a blanket with me just in case I was to warm, so it wasn’t a problem had antihistamines too, apart from that really lovely place to stay, with visiting sheep too .”

“Had a lovely stay, the barn has been finished to such a high standard and the owners have clearly put a huge amount of thought, love, money and time into the restoration but also the set up for short term guests.”

The access was a bit challenging as we don't have a four wheel drive car but we managed fine in the end, just had to take it slow and hope we didn't meet anyone coming in the opposite direction! Would recommend for a summer or winter break (as rhe barn is SUPER hot with the qood burner going) for a couple or two friends.

The property

Lingcombe Barn is a beautifully renovated barn offering a cosy retreat within the Dartmoor National Park on the edge of the moors. However, it is still within easy reach of the lovely historic town of Chagford. The Barn sits in a unique, rural setting offering walks including the Two Moors Way and the Mariners Way direct from the door. The peaceful setting gives guests a chance to relax and unwind and enjoy being close to nature, the sheep and the ponies which wander down from the moor. Castle Drogo, Grimspound and The Warren House Inn are all nearby attractions and within hiking distance. This lovely barn offers up to date modern facilities including underfloor heating, eco efficient woodburning stove, Smart TV, dishwasher and a bespoke oak kitchen with everything you would need for a stay.

On the same level a modern bathroom offers the choice of having a shower or warm soak in a bath.

Up two steps you will find the open plan living area offers a cosy setting with log burning fire.

Heading up the oak staircase there is a beautifully styled bedroom with king size bed offering luxurious comfort.

Views from the bedroom look out onto trees and open space.

Outside for the Summer months is a south facing terrace with table, bench and sun umbrella with easy deck chairs also provided.

About the location

CHAGFORD

Okehampton 12 miles; Exeter 21 miles.

A picturesque town at the northern point of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. Chagford, one of the five Stannary towns of Dartmoor, is small in size but is packed with amenities and things to do. There is a wide range of shops as well as four pubs. Chagford also has more active facilities such as public tennis court and a seasonal, open-air swimming pool to enjoy at your leisure. It is a town of great history, home to the Three Crowns Hotel which dates back to the 1200's. Chagford is well known for its culture, hosting film, literary and music festivals in the town as well as an annual running race, known as Two Hills Race. Just over 21 miles away is the bustling, beautiful city of Exeter for a different kind of break, definitely worth a visit. The charming, attractive town of Okehampton sits just 12 miles away.
