“The overall layout of the accommodation was accurate however the place was extremely dirty and some areas were either worn or broken.”

Mould and dirty washing clearly present. We tried contacting the owner numerous times but we got no reply. Unfortunately, we believe the neighbours maybe smoking drugs too as there was occasionally a strong smell coming through the house so we couldn't have the windows open making the place really uncomfortably hot. Not a great experience I'm afraid.

Dear guest, I was sorry to read that you did not have a particularly good experience when at the house. I will of course bring the cleaning aspect to the attention of this team. I am unsure what could have been broken or worn as the house has recently been refurbished with new kitchen and flooring etc. I have just heard from the House Manager who leaves his details in the property should you have any concerns. I understand that he did not hear from you. He has also sent over 26 photos which were taken just before the booking and the house looks spotless in every photo. I am therefore a bit baffled by this. I will be discussing this with him and the cleaning team. Property Owner

“Lovely location.”

Property was okay just a few things that just needs doing pots and pans need updating a few bits like painting some of the paints falling off the ceiling bit dangerous the stairs out the back into the courtyard when wet floorboard upstairs need renewing. Both back and front door need new locks and handles.

“Lovely quirky (in a fun way) cottage, typical old style set out, space well used, everything you could possibly need in the kitchen, lounge was very comfortable, WiFi was quick, cute sun trap of a garden, our dogs didn’t like the decking for doing their business but we walked them a lot so not an issue, coop 5 mins walk away, several pubs 5-10 mins walk away, Ilfracombe town/seafront/ harbour 10-15 min walk.”

Parking is on a first come basis but we were always able to park within the next street or 2.

“Hollycombe Cottage was clean, well presented and welcoming.”

It had everything we needed for a very pleasant stay. The kitchen was well equipped and the lounge very comfortable. The courtyard was perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine and completely enclosed so was safe for our dog to wander in and out. Although we could hear the neighbours at times it was nothing more than you would expect during the summer when families are enjoying being in the garden and didn't hinder our time at all. There is a handy coop 2 minutes walk away and we did manage to park near to the property each day. All in all we would definitely be back. It was reassuring to get a message from the owner before we arrived providing an emergency contact if needed especially as it is virtually impossible to contact sykes which is no fault of the cottage owner. I was worried after reading the 2 bad reviews that were added after I had booked but our experience was thankfully far from that stated, the place was spotlessly clean and we had been left plenty of cleaning supplies and we were very happy with the outside space. Thank you Hollycombe for a very relaxing break.

“Drains smelly and drain flies invading the kitchen.”

Floors dirty.Windows blown with condensation between double glazing.Not pet friendly.Journey to the dropped back yard hazardous.As were the stairs to upper level .Parking difficult.Sofa smelly and in need of a deep clean.Outside facilities in town poor.No close dog friendly beach or even a grassy area to walk dog.No hand towels .Dirty old germ ridden scourer and dish cloth.Not one dishwasher tablet ,hand towel or hand-wash.No soap or washing up liquid.Glass panel to prevent falling 6 foot into back yard did not appear to be safety glass.I could go on .We were that uncomfortable we left a day early.

“As I have already reported to you but with no response - this place was dirty.”

The utensils, pots and pans were grubby. There were crumbs and dust all over the place. The stairs as you walk in are revolting and set a very bad first impression. The courtyard is a dump and totally overlooked by loud neighbours. I hated staying here and couldn't wait to leave.

“Hollycombe in Ilfracombe is a delightful property.”

It is well equipped with everything that you need and has extremely comfortable beds. The open plan downstairs really lends itself to a sociable cooking and dining experience. The courtyard garden is lovely to sit in of an evening as well. There is a dish washer and washing machine. A walk in wardrobe. I honestly could not fault this little house. Ilfracombe itself is well worth visiting it has a dramatic coastline including the coastal path where you can walk to delightful little bays such as Hele Bay where we enjoyed a picnic on top of a rock. Unfortunately, the Tunnels beaches were closed due to landslide so hope to go back to visit but there is a Landmark theatre and a museum. The harbour is beautiful with little shops and bistros/bars etc and of course the amazing Damien Hirst's Verity standing proud on a pile of law books, it fits in well looking out to see ( a bit statue of liberty-like. This was my first time to Ilfracombe and I was not disappointed . We walked up the hill to the Chapel and we could just about see Wales! At the end of the day, we enjoyed a cold beer looking over the sea/harbour at the Lime Kilm bar/bistro. We also enjoyed the Italian restaurant Giovanni and Luca where we had seafood pasta. We also bought fresh fish from the harbour and they gave us instructions how to cook it. I could go on and on. We were blessed with the weather and we visited Lundy Island from nearby Bideford although you can go from Ilfracombe depending on the tides. There are some lovely nearby spots to explore such as Lynmouth and Coombe Martin. I would definitely go back to Hollycombe. The house is amazing. The only negative would be that High Street looks a bit deprived but that did not spoil it for us. In fact the people were very friendly and we felt very welcome. Nice touch of the owner to leave us a Cream Tea and some milk for a cuppa. We will be back!!!
