“We had a wonderful week’s stay at The Cider Barn in Devon as a family of seven adults, and it was the perfect place for us all to relax and spend quality time together.”

The barn is beautifully presented, spacious, and very well equipped, with plenty of room for everyone to spread out while still enjoying time together in the lovely communal areas. The bedrooms were comfortable, the kitchen had most things we needed for cooking family meals, and the whole property was spotlessly clean on arrival. The location is peaceful and ideal for exploring Devon, with beautiful countryside all around and plenty of attractions, coastal walks, and villages within easy reach by car. After busy days out, it was lovely to return to such a comfortable and welcoming place. The hosts and their family were very friendly, helpful, and they are invested in the local businesses in the area, if you read the folder in the cottage. The surrounding businesses are well worth a visit. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Cider Barn to families or groups looking for a relaxing getaway in a beautiful part of the country. We made some fantastic memories during our stay and would happily return.

“We had a lovely personal welcome by the owner Shirley, and was the start to our fabulous stay at The Cider Barn that followed.”

The open plan living upstairs was extremely spacious and great for cooking, eating and just relaxing together. The lower ground floor bedrooms were extremely cosy, with the added luxury that they had doors that opened out to a private courtyard- we found ourselves drinking our morning coffee in pj’s here, underneath the stunningly beautiful Wisteria in full bloom, and fig tree full of fruit. We even had a bbq in the courtyard with fresh seafood and fish from a day trip to Brixham. The Cider Barn’s location toward the end of the road, meant it was very quiet which was great for our travelling cat who loved long walks on her lead and lounging underneath the wisteria watching bumblebees. Sadly, the only disappointment was not having easy access to the river, beach and picnic table - Shirley kindly mentioned that due to the last local river floor, the landscape around the river had changed considerably, access was much harder and with steep embankment. Regardless of this, we had the most wonderful time at the barn. Was indeed a great location to many day trips and local attractions - the South Devon Chili Farm was actually at the top of the road, and Shirley recommended the Avon Mill Garden centre 15mts away that was great for breakfast. We also discovered another fantastic food spot a stones throw away, The Ring Feeder Cafe with fabulous views across the land, plus a lovely farm shop that served us well during our stay. Thank you for a great stay, we came home feeling much nurtured.

“A fantastic Holiday at The Cider Barn.”

Thank you so much for a wonderful Break at The Cider Barn. The accommodation was perfect for our party of 4 adults and 3 young children, especially with the spacious bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. It is very well equipped, comfortable and so relaxing. We enjoyed returning each day after our days out to enjoy a glass of wine in the beautifully kept gardens and sample figs from the tree admiring the fabulous views. The children say their favourite days of the Holiday were spent down by the River fishing and having a picnic and were so excited to see a young deer cross the field. The Barn is in an ideal location to visit many areas of the South Hams. We enjoyed a walk along the Costal Path to Gara Rock, days at the beaches of Mothecombe and Mill Bay,crossing on the ferry from Salcombe along with a day on Dartmoor and a fun day at Woodlands. There really are so many places to go, we could have easily stayed for 2 weeks. Our Hosts were so friendly and always available but never intruded. Thanks again and we hope we can return.

“Good holiday destination.”

House basically as described and illustrated on web site. Pots, pans and cutlery on par for holiday home. Information a bit out of date, covid rules, pub closed for a couple of years, small Spar in Loddiswell compared to "village of Loddiswell is home to a choice of shops and traditional inns". Otherwise the info provided a bit dated and could do with maps of local walks etc.

“A beautiful tranquil get away.”

We loved it, there were 8 adults age ranges 28-87 and one dog i.n our party, loads of room. We cooked each evening the kitchen was well equipped and the table comfortably sat us all with room to spare. We were made very welcome by the hosts. We visited many different areas, including Paignton and Plymouth and found it easy to get to. Thank you we would book again

“We enjoyed our time at The Cider Barn loved the layout and the hosts were welcoming.”

It is an ideal place to relax. It is down a narrow long lane which was ok for me but noticed made others anxious. Loved the fig tree, walk to the river and buying produce from local farm shops. Hearing and seeing buzzards and owls. A book with information about cottage and local amenities would be helpful. Little things that could be quickly remedied, a chipped glass and mug, rust on chrome fittings(shower room downstairs). Musty smelly in the far end twin room and bathroom in master bedroom. There was cleaning equipment left in a bag in the living room. So a timely check pre arrival would have sorted this. With those things checked it would have been 5 ⭐️ for us.

We are glad you generally enjoyed your time at The Cider Barn. On the criticisms you mentioned , I am sorry you did not find the visitors info which was in a folder in the drawer in the living room area giving lots of useful info about the property, farm itself , local eating places, walks, etc and the general area. The cleaning team should have noticed the chipped mug and glass, they have already been replaced, and of course should not have left their cleaning materials bag in any room. The property is checked by myself or my daughter before every guest changeover when we put in milk, etc , so obviously one of us missed this bag that day but sometimes new guests arrive very soon after the busy cleaning team leave and something like that unfortunately slips our attention, but hopefully is a rare event. The rust on a shower rail downstairs has had that rail replaced already. No one staying has ever mentioned a musty smell before in either room so I can only imagine that perhaps moisture in the air from showers/ baths used that morning ,just before previous guests had left ,had not had time to be aired from those rooms if the bedroom windows had been closed too soon when the cleaners left. The rooms mentioned themselves do not have any inherent damp problem but both have ensuite showers/ bath ( with extractors) within shower rooms within the bedrooms in question If you had mentioned this to us at the time we would have been able to explain fully about airing/putting on the extractors for a bit longer in the bathrooms and attached bedrooms in question after showering ,etc but hopefully this did not spoil your arrival and that the musty smell you noticed dispersed quickly. I will mention these remarks to the cleaning team and I am sure they will doublecheck these things do not happen again.! Thank you for drawing our attention to these problems and hopefully I have explained what happened or what has been done about them. Property Owner

“We had the most wonderful stay!”

The property is great with well-equipped kitchen and oven (perhaps the best oven we’ve used in a holiday rental!). Beds were comfy and lots of room to lounge around. Outside space was well-established and beautifully peaceful, a proper paradise. My only regret was that the figs weren’t ripe when we were there! We certainly felt in the holiday spirit whilst at the property. The stream at the bottom of the field is an absolute treat, highly encouraged to visit with a picnic and spend the day there, our dog loved it, as did we. It’s certainly worth taking a cooling dip! We had a family emergency whilst at the property at the owners could not have been more supportive. So very kind and always there when we needed them. This is certainly a place I would return. Location is rural and has a few great places to visit within the local area; Garden Centre, Shop and Cafe Weaver Green with AMAZING sustainable rugs and blankets etc. and a gorgeous outside space to sit and have coffee and cake, and distance to a good supermarket is not far at all. I would definitely return to this property, I felt very happy here

“The Cider Barn is a quirky holiday home in a very quiet location.”

Lovely furnishings make it very homely. The main bedroom was comfortable but sadly the twin room beds are very small and very uncomfortable. The showers are very small, but there was plenty of hot water. The kitchen equipment is desperately in need of updating - scratched saucepans, old chopping boards etc. random glasses! With a little investment this could be an outstanding property.

We are pleased you generally liked the property. We are disappointed and somewhat puzzled with the remarks re the single beds as they all have memory foam toppers and are normal 3 ft single bed size! Unfortunately different guests perception of mattresses and beds comfort is a very subjective thing as can be seen by the review the end of March 2022. Its so difficult to suit every guests preference for mattress softness or firmness! The kitchen is , we thought from previous reviews, generally equipped quite well, (I refer to the feedback of 26 th March ) although of course, after your review, we will check the chopping boards and glasses and replace or replenish if necessary. It was pleasing you obviously appreciated the furnishings which we have made a big effort to keep looking fresh and comfortable and up to date.( Ie, new carpets laid 2021 winter, new throws, cushions, etc , every season. “Beautiful setting, very peaceful.”

Lots of interesting and pretty walks from the property. The beds were very comfortable. Lovely and warm, even though we had some cold weather while we were there. Plenty of hot water for all of our group to shower/ bath. Well equipped kitchen with plentiful pots, pans and crockery. We all left refreshed after our stay.

“Farmer Steve and his wife were very welcoming.”

Being near the farm animals was nice for our children. We was able to see the newborn calfs in the field. Parking was awkward at times due to the parking area being used by other vehicles. The picnic area wasn't maintained, therefore unusable. The lain leading to the farm is long and narrow, it would have been helpful knowing this before booking. I wouldn't recommend this property for elderly or those with mobility requirements as access is tricky and the interior is uneven in places. Overall, our stay in the property was good.

We are glad you generally enjoyed the holiday at our Cider Barn and that the children enjoyed seeing the new born calves born that week. Unfortunately our no through lane is typical of most of the lanes off the main roads in the South Hams, but there are numerous passing places in our particular lane and being a way down it means the location is very peaceful. We presume the picnic area referred to is the area fenced off by the river and this time of the year is prone to occasional flooding which means the tables, chairs ,etc cannot be left out by the river and it is too wet to get a mower down there to cut the grass as we do for the Late Spring and Summer. “We stayed at the barn with 2 older teenagers, grandparents and the family dog and it worked really well.”

The gardens are split with courtyard style gardens both at the front and rear of the property that were dog proof. The gardens have mature plants and are very pretty but you do not have a view from the gardens. The view from the main living room upstairs did make up for this and had a wonderful view of the Avon valley. The facilities were great and importantly the wifi worked which is essential with teenagers in tow. The river area is about a 10 minute walk down the fields to the bottom of the valley and is really lovely. The barn is pretty rural which is what we were looking for but might not suit everyone

“Please note that the dishwasher is missing wheels on the right hand side of the lower rack.”

This would be a simple fix and would make it much easier to fill and unload. Also I would recommend that some smaller frying pans are provided as you are unable to fit more than one on the hob. Apart from this, a really lovely place to stay.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry that you had a slight issue with the dishwasher. Our repair man had trouble getting hold of the part recently due to Covid but is has now been replaced. The property

The Cider Barn has been fabulously converted to provide homely accommodation for eight guests as it rests peacefully in the Avon Valley of Devon, near Loddiswell.

With a wonderfully warming interior and much to see and do within a close proximity, bring your friends and family together to escape in luscious countryside.

Benefiting from thoughtful reverse-level accommodation across the ground and lower ground floors, the open-plan living area on the upper level takes full advantage of the breath-taking scenery on offer.

This homely layout is dominated by a stunning stone fireplace housing a woodburner while also enhanced by rustic wooden floorboards, here you can put your feet up on the snug sofas or rustle up a delicious meal to be enjoyed at the dining table set for eight.

This floor also plays host to an immaculate king-size bedroom which provides a stunning en-suite with attractive period tiles and a bath with hand-held shower.

Step down towards the lower ground floor where you will find three further delightful bedrooms, two of which also sport en-suite facilities whilst the double room has adjacent access to a lovely shower room.

From here you can easily wander out onto the enclosed courtyard which has been beautifully kept so you can sit and relax in the summer months, a further patio from the open-plan living area makes for the perfect spot to enjoy an alfresco meal with your loved ones.

Keen walkers and cyclists can find superb countryside to enjoy right from your doorstep, throughout the Avon Valley.

A 5 minute stroll through the fields takes you to the the River Avon where you can enjoy a BBQ by the little beach.

This is sheltered and has seating to relax whilst the kids enjoy a paddie or a play on the beach itself.

The charming village of Loddiswell is home to a choice of shops and traditional inns which make this a fabulous holiday base.

The surrounding area offers much to do for all tastes, the market town of Kingsbridge is well worth a walk around, while slightly further afield is the ever-popular and glorious seaside resort of Salcombe.

The busy little town of Kingsbridge lies at the head of a marine estuary in the attractive South Hams area of South Devon. Kingsbridge is home to a range of lovely independent shops and coffee shops, as well as a 3-screen cinema and an award-winning pub. During the summer season there are estuary excursions by ferry to Salcombe which lies on the banks of the Kingsbridge Estuary, making it one of the prettiest towns in South Devon. Salcombe is famous for its outstanding coastal views, rolling countryside, and is a watersports paradise for kayaking, surfing, paddle boarding and powerboating. It is packed with boutique shops, high street brands and independent producers, restaurants serving freshly caught seafood, and Salcombe Gin and Ice cream! Kingsbridge is perfectly located as a base to enjoy the abundant wildlife in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), which also forms part of the South Devon Heritage Coast.
