“Brook Cottage was as described, 5-star accommodation set in the beautiful countryside of South Devon.”

The directions provided by the owner were excellent and it wasn’t difficult to find, although some of the lanes to access it were quite small and, for us at least, it was a drive rather than walk to the beach, these were also easily located. Our favourite beach in the Hams is Bigbury on Sea which took us between 25-35 minutes but armed with a picnic and beach chairs/swimwear we spent two (different) days there. Parking is quite expensive (£12/day) but if you go equipped you don’t need to spend anything else other than ice creams. Mothecombe was lovely though at least a 5-minute walk down - if you’re not fit (and I am not!) then you can at the very least double that on the way back as the steep lanes were quite hard - if you’re fit (like my teenagers) then you won’t notice it so much. Hope Cove was another great visit and there are two or three lovely pubs serving food, a small car park and fantastic views and coastal walks. We were lucky with the weather and had a wonderful week away with the family, made all the more pleasant by returning to such a beautiful cottage. We will be back

The property

Tucked away in a beautiful South Hams valley, a short walk from one of the finest stretches of the Coast Path, 3 miles from lovely sandy Mothecombe beach and 1½ miles from waterside pubs/shops at Newton Ferrers, a smart cottage, end-of-row in a tranquil hamlet.

Split-level layout and fresh decor give a light, airy feel, with big glazed doors to a terrace (table/chairs).

Beyond, gated bridge (care needed) over a pretty, babbling brook to enclosed garden with good-sized lawn sheltered by tall trees and views to meadows where hens scratch and inquisitive alpacas graze (opportunities sometimes to help with feeding, by arrangement; scarves to purchase).

Step up to front door to kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, freezer, larder fridge, electric cooker); glass balustrade with open tread stairs down to fabulous living room (woodburner, TV/DVD), full of light with high apex beams and doors to terrace.

Twin bedroom (linkable to 6' double) with en suite shower-room (suite).

Upstairs (stairgates), two more smart bedrooms (big beams/some sloping ceilings) - a double (5' bed, TV) with en suite bathroom (suite with separate shower), and a room with two singles.

Bathroom (suite plus hand-shower).

A hidden gem in a peaceful rural spot, with pretty villages and beaches nearby (Coast Path, 1 mile). Newton Ferrers/Noss Mayo: adjoining small villages beside the River Yealm estuary, sheltered by oak-wooded hillsides, popular for sailing, lovely for walking or just sitting.

Essential shops (Newton Ferrers) and good food pubs.

Low tide footpath across the creek.

Tennis courts; riding stables.

Pedestrian ferry to coast walk to Wembury (village), and secluded beach.

Mothecombe (nearest sandy beach by car), 4 miles.

Plymouth, 11.

About the location

NEWTON FERRERS

Plymouth 8 miles.

A tranquil, picturesque village in the South Hams area of Devon, on a bend of the River Yealm leading up from the South Devon coast (1 mile). The perfect haven for sailors, for those who love messing about near water and for those who appreciate stunning and civilised countryside. There is a local butcher, chemist, post office and grocer in Newton Ferrers and an organic farm shop just two miles away. The village pub, with fantastic views across the water towards Noss Mayo and the creek, serves good food and drink. The area is blessed with many walks that meander along the waterside and across the fields, while to the north Dartmoor's high tors and open spaces beckon those who love wild country. The city of Plymouth with its shops, Marine Aquarium and Barbican quayside area is just 8 miles away while beautiful Totnes with its 'alternative' view on life is a must. If the beach rather than boats is what you seek, you won't do better than the beautiful sands at Mothecombe and Bigbury just a few miles down the road. Both are accessible by road or boat from Newton Ferrers. There are a number of excellent golf courses nearby.
