The Old Greengrocers is a charming cottage nestled in the heart of Shaldon, Devon, just a short stroll from local shops, three welcoming pubs, a couple cafes, a coffee shop and the stunning coastline. Perfect for families or groups of friends, this delightful retreat offers a quintessential seaside experience. The cottage was a greengrocers that has been lovingly restored and refurbished.

Upon entering the property, you will be greeted by a tastefully decorated open-plan area, which houses the kitchen, dining room, and sitting room. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to prepare delicious meals, which can be enjoyed at the dining table. After dinner, retire to the sitting room, where you can relax and unwind in front of the TV.

The property boasts two well-presented bedrooms, a double and a twin, both offering a peaceful space to rest after a day of seaside adventures. The sofa is a sofa bed in the living area. The bathroom is sleek and stylish, featuring a bath with a shower over, a basin, and a WC, providing everything you need to freshen up each day.

Additionally, there is a handy ground floor cloakroom with a basin and WC, adding an extra layer of convenience to your stay.

Outside, you will find a rear enclosed courtyard complete with furniture, providing a private space to enjoy a morning coffee or an evening drink. This charming cottage is the perfect base for exploring the delights of Shaldon and the surrounding Devonshire coastline.

Facilities and Maintenance

Encountered a range of issues to do with cleanliness and maintenance, many of which we were able to fix ourselves, and shared as a snag list with the owners, who had enquired to make sure things were ok.

Our intention was to supply positive and useful feedback, and it was received in that spirit. I think the property has a lot of potential, but was let down in this instance.

What a great little find.

We were in Shaldon for the bowls tournament and Shaldon bowls green was literally a 1 minute walk to the green. Lovely little garden. Plenty of space inside with the added bonus of the downstairs loo. Kitchen was fully equipped and washing machine was handy with a clothes airer. Big bathroom with a great shower. You have thought about everything and we would definitely stay here again. Handy fish and chip shop directly opposite and Shaldon is such a lovely quaint village with a 2 minute walk to the beach and ferry.

When we arrived we were very pleased with the location and first impression inside.

On reaching for a mug we quickly realised that house keeping was very poor and the first wine glass had obviously never been washed as it was stained from red wine. The pans were way passed their life with broken handles, one pan missing a handle to make draining safe and all handles loose and very dirty. The owner is obviously unaware that All electricals must be PAT tested again for safety and on observation this has never happened. Upstairs the floors are not just squeaky because the house is old but so loud which could be due to the lack of under lay throughout but they are amazingly loud! Unfortunately the owner Also decided that curtains are not needed just blinds and a lace curtain so I would recommend other customers to take a good eye mask. I would highly recommend that the owner should spend sometime in the property to check these grumbles as this house does not reflect what we expect from Sykes or the modern travellers expectations.

I always appreciate, fair accurate and realistic feedback from tenants who have stayed in my property and address issues if any occur. I am sorry that a dirty wine glass was missed in the cleaning and my cleaners have been informed and will react accordingly. I have inspected the pans and one pan is missing a handle because a screw has come out, the other pans are fine. However, I have arranged to have a couple of new pans. The floor does squeak because it is an old cottage and as previously mentioned all boards have been screwed down. Underlay is not a installation that would make any difference. The name of the cottage is The Old Greengrocers which accurately reflects the age of the property. The bedroom windows have timber slatted blinds and lace curtains which is normally sufficient to block out light. However, I have arranged to have black out curtains fitted. It is factually incorrect to state that all electrical appliances require to be PAT tested, they do not. Rental properties are required to have annual gas safety certification and 5 yearly electrical certification . Both have been certified wihin the past 7 months. Electrical appliances do not need to be tested, but they are inspected on a regular basis. I understand that there are some tenants who have varying levels of expectation and generally the vast majority are completely satisfied with my cottage. However, I do take exception when tenants are factually innacurate or unreasonable when leaving posts I have many returning tenants who really enjoy to stay in my cottage.

This is a lovely positioned property but it is in need of some tlc.

The flooring upstairs squeeks everytime you move across it and is even louder at night. The beds are not comfortable, the twin room if you sit in the middle of the bed it pops up both ends and the springs get you when you turn over.. Both bedroom windows need some darker curtains or you get woken at sun up. The shower head is in need of replacing as it will not stay in position. The sofa bed is not comfy to sit on as the springs poke into your back and the matching chair the bottom seems to have dropped out of it. Apart from these groans it is a nice place to stay and in a lovely seaside village. Be aware that parking can be an issue. You are only allowed to stay in the Ness car park for 2 days. Parking is limited to one hour and no return in two between 9am-6pm. Wardens do check regularily. The London Inn has good food and the beer in the both the Ferry Boat and the London is excellent. The Ness is a lovely place to sit with wonderful views. The local Ferry is currently £2.00 each way but is set to increase and worth every penny. There are lots of places to see in the surrounding area and Dartmoor is just a stones throw away for those more venturous.

I appreciate feedback and have been catering for visitors for over 12 years and take on board customer reviews. It is fair to say that the customer feedback over the past 12 years has been very positive however I will address your points as listed. 1. The Old Greengrocers is an old cottage which can have some squeaky floor boards which have all been screwed down. Unfortunately this is the nature of old properties and gives it it's charm. 2. There are timber slatted blinds over the windows to cut out sunlight so I am not sure why it was not sufficiently dark. 3. The divan mattresses have been replaced, but I have never had any previous complaints. 4. The shower head has been replaced. 5. The sofa bed has been repaired.
