Description
Teign Cottage is a pretty detached cottage just a short stroll from the Teign estuary and slipway and within a level walk of the village of Shaldon. Arranged over two floors is cottage is a perfect spot for a family getaway in a beautiful seaside village. To the front of the cottage there is an enclosed terrace which is perfect for watching the world go by whilst enjoying an alfresco meal in the warmer weather. Inside a comfy sitting room complete with electric flame effect fire is a lovely relaxing space to hunker down after a full day exploring. Across the hall is the bright kitchen/dining room brimming with character along with a breakfast table to sit round and plan your next adventure. Up a steep and winding flight of stairs is the first floor with two cosy bedrooms, a twin and a double with river views plus there's a neat bathroom.
Shaldon is compact in size but packs a range of shops and pubs, explore the small Zoo or venture through the smugglers tunnel to discover Ness Cove. Alternatively hop on the pedestrian ferry to Teignmouth (or travel via the road bridge), a regency town and busy port, to discover the pier, tennis courts and other seaside attractions. Further afield the coastal town of Torquay (7 miles) or the cathedral city of Exeter (15 miles) offer a more big town experience and each can easily be reached via the mainline railway station in Teignmouth.

Very Disappointing.
The cottage itself was gorgeous and could be amazing with some attention to detail and a deep clean! The bath/shower tiling grout and surround was covered in black mould including the shower hose and head and the bath still had a scum line from someone else’s visit! Completely disgusting! The hand rail above the bath was very rusty. This has not happened overnight!! Oven trays were dirty with food residue and dirty mugs. The only saucepan with a lid that fitted was the steamer. (All too small for the saucepans available) Several cooking utensils were also dirty. Under the sink were random empty boxes and empty containers. It was as if no one had even bothered to check what was or wasn’t in there between change overs or that everything was clean ready for the next guests. Wires exposed on ceiling going to smoke alarm (casing was off) spot light fitting in kitchen broken/ not fitted properly. The quilt cover was old and bobbly (so much that we went and bought a new one along with some oven trays) Old furniture is great but handles missing from drawers is not! We have a smallholding and live in an old cottage so are used to “clean dirt” and understand the quirks of old buildings BUT if you are letting it out then basic cleanliness and maintenance is essential NOT optional. Positives were a decent mattress. Easy to use heating. Cosy sitting room. You can see the sea from the window. Good communication from the owner. Shaldon itself was lovely with great cafes, pubs and independent shops, we went out of season so parking was not an issue. We go away for 1 week a year and always stay in a cottage and have always been really happy with our accommodation until this year, I can’t believe that no one else has mentioned the bathroom in any of the reviews as we definitely would not have booked!!! (I have photos and video of it if Sykes cottages would like to see them)
The location of the cottage is amazing for sure.
Everything needed for a weeks' stay is there to ensure your comfort. Shaldon is a gorgeous village but beware the narrow roads, reversing to the property to offload makes it easier and don't free park around the green, your car will probably get scratched. That said, never saw a warden all week and saw local cars parked up for days on end in the ''max stay'' areas... Lovely little market on the green on a Wednesday (luckily won the star prize on the tombola) and would strongly advise making use of the ferry to Teignmouth. Only issue with going further afield is actually where to go with so much choice: Dawlish, Exmouth, Plymouth, Exeter... the list goes on. Absolutely loved it and we're back next year. Teign Cottage is a beautiful "chocolate box looking property in the heart of Shaldon.
The appliances that we needed were easy to use and in good working order. We were blessed with good weather, we did not use the heating system, so cannot comment. The master bedroom is very spacious, more importantly the bed was very comfortable. The advice to reverse up to Teign Cottage to drop off and load is not as daunting as it might sound. We parked at the Ness, a very pleasant l, scenic, half mile walk away, reasonably priced at just over £6 for a full day. Overall, Teign Cottage, is a quaint, quiet property, Shaldon is a lovely base to explore that part.of Devon. I hope future guest enjoy Teign Cottage as much as we did.

Love cottage with everything needed, large lounge and kitchen.
Second bedroom is small but perfectly comfortable. In the rather amazing summer heat flag stone floor in Galway and kitchen gave cool respite to the dogs. Owners were friendly and available to answer all questions and provide assistance with a sticky door! Lovely outdoor space to enjoy and store paddle board and kayak.

Teign Cottage is a beautiful cottage in the most perfect location in Shaldon, close to the beach and the village with a sea view from the gate and the master bedroom.
It had everything we needed for a fortnight's holiday and the most useful thing for us was the enclosed outside terrace which had both sun and shade all day long from morning until early evening and was slightly larger than we thought it looked on the photos. We parked our car in the large Ness Carpark and never had any issues finding a parking space. If we go back to Shaldon we would definitely stay in the same cottage again.

Teign Cottage was a fantastic stay for our family of four with two young kids.
25m from the beach, 200m from the Clipper cafe and the Ship Inn pub. Perfect. Would highly recommend and we’ll definitely be rebooking.

Lovely cottage centrally located great for walks and good local pubs Would definitely stay again Chose to get a weeks parking ticket up at the ness it gives access to several ( but not all) car parks in Teignmouth so great value and only a 5 min walk away from the cottage Many thanks for the welcome

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted to hear that you found it a lovely cottage. Being over 400 years old, and Grade 2 listed, we can't really alter anything inside or outside, but only keep it in its original condition which requires a lot of work from our lovely handyman/decorator just to keep the walls going. Cob needs a lot of upkeep, so our mission is to keep it as it is rather than 'update' it.
we had a lovely warm comfortable stay in teign cottage with everything you need for a winter or summer holiday.
the owners were very attentive and friendly. The cottage was an original old thatched fishermans cottage with tiny windows and very thick walls that added to its charm. The cottage is within 20 yards from the sandy beach witch we could see from the bedroom window. The small local shops were very useful and lots of short walks to the ness and up the ness where you can find another sandy beach, you can also catch the ferry from the beach by the cottage to take you over to teignmouth. We had a lovely time and recomend the cottage to anyone who would like to stay there for a holiday. thank you roger and judy newman

Another wonderful week at Teign Cottage!
Lesley & Jim were a pleasure as always & the cottage was warm, cosy & welcoming. The Teign Cottage is a stones throw from the beach & all the amenities. Because we go out of season the parking is not a problem, in season there are two large car parks. Shaldon has everything you need - pubs, cafes various independent shops & a Morrisons just up the road for anything else! We will definitely be back again!

Fantastic location in Shaldon.
Parking can be a problem but we were lucky to find a spot on the green. Unloading can be an issue as lane is narrow and larger vehicles may not be able to access the cottage directly. The cottage itself is quaint, quirky and cosy. We felt at home immediately. The stairs might be an issue for the less able and you must remember to duck in places as the ceilings are quite low but this was expected from a grade 2 listed cottage. Overall an enjoyable experience,

The stairs are well photographed on the Helpful Holidays/Sykes website so we would urge any potential guests to look at the photos if they feel unsure. The cottage is over 400 years old and Grade 2 listed so nothing can be changed, nor would we wish to do so - we like to honour all the times in which the cottage has existed. We would also say that the cottage is situated in an ancient village which saw Viking raiders back in the day as well as other less welcome visitors. Thus, it is not designed with parking of cars in mind. However, it is a wonderful 'chill out' place and we are so happy to share our cottage with our guests. We do hope to welcome you back one day. The outside and location of cottage is fabulous.
However the inside and furnishings are very dissapointing. Furniture old, mismatched and in poor condition. Simple things like those pictures on the walls and whats with mismatched hanging cups in the kitchen. Seriously needs updating. We know the area and felt it let shaldon down. No welcome hamper, no little but meaningful little things in place. Very basic and seriously needs updating and making much smarter inside . Very dissapointing indeed.
Oh dear, we're so sad that you didn't enjoy what we have done inside the cottage. Our crockery set is rustic and suits the cottage we think, with matching cups and saucers as well, and we have two sets of mugs, plus some our lovely guests have left us. Our cottage is over 400 years old, so we wanted to honour that as best we could with some antique furniture, such as the Edwardian desk in the main bedroom, the four dark carved chairs in the kitchen - they came from a Norfolk cottage and are also very old, plus we had to have some modern furniture as well such as the beds and the kitchen table and matching chairs. The bookcase is from the late 50's. Thus we have managed to find things from various decades, just the interior of the cottage would have been over the years. We're The size and shape of the living room makes it difficult to get normal sofas so we had the pair in there made to fit. It's true we have a plethora of chairs, but this is so that the guests who stay with us and have family in the village can all get together in our cottage, which often happens. Throws are used on the sofas so that our guests can snuggle in them if they wish and feel cosy. Above all, we didn't feel the cottage should have a completely 'modern' interior as we feel it would take away from it's ancient ambiance and the generations who have lived there and let it down. We continue to look for items from earlier centuries. We hope the above helps you to understand why the cottage is as it is. Very best wishes. Lesley and Jim
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
An historical cottage in a great location. Nice to have a cooker I could use without having to study its instruction manual! The dishwasher was also great, working much better than in some other properties we've rented. Lovely, comfy kingsize bed. Teign Cottage had everything we needed. And its so close to the water and the ferry point to cross to Teignmouth.

Lovely stay in a very interesting & quirky cottage.
Any problems were dealt with very promptly by the owners.My only criticism was the listing mentioned a log fire which wasn't for use as the cottage is thatched-we didn't need it as the weather was very good for the time of year & the cottage itself was warm.

The website only mentions an electric flame effect fire in the living room. There is a wood burner in the kitchen but this cannot be used and is chained to prevent anyone from using it which is why this wood burner is not mentioned on the website. The property is a thatched cottage and so no fires are allowed, including barbecues or candles.
A wonderful period cottage in a perfect location, close to all the amenities of Shaldon.
The cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and was warm and cosy throughout. Everything is within easy walking distance, including Teignmouth, which is around a 20-minute walk away. One day, we took the train from Teignmouth to Exeter, which was a great experience. Shaldon itself has friendly pubs, a superb café, and an excellent restaurant. The cottage is just a short stroll from the beach, where we frequently enjoyed walks along the shore. We also visited Shaldon Zoo and explored the Smuggler’s Tunnel. The area is mostly flat and very accessible, making it ideal for walking. Parking was not an issue for us in February, as we found a space just a few streets away. This is an excellent property with friendly and welcoming owners, perfectly situated to enjoy the charming village of Shaldon and beyond. Highly recommended!

A very quaint picturesque cottage on the outside, in a very central position in the village.
Car parking not ideal being 300 yards away and up a hill. Internally it was disappointing overall. To be fair the beds and linen were clean but the oven could have been cleaner. Kitchen equipment and utensils could do with updating as could some of the furniture. It would have been nice to find a bottle of milk in the fridge rather than an old yogurt!
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. As regards the furniture, we have tried to give a rustic feel to the cottage, which is over 400 years old. There is an Edwardian lady's desk in the larger bedroom and we have had to find furniture that fits into the living room that also gives our guests a comfortable stay. So sorry about the strange yoghurt, but very surprised as our cleaning team usually don't leave things behind in the fridge as they clean it freshly for each set of guests. Also, our team normally leave the oven in an immaculate state, so sorry if you felt it was not so. Regarding your comment about milk, we used to do this, but found that so many of our guests don't drink it any more and left it behind, that we stopped doing it. Best wishes Lesley and Jim Harmer
Beautiful cottage in a superb location.
Very attentive property owners who lived only a short distance away. You will need to park your car a few streets away or in a nearby public car park (which you can book for a week on line) but this was not really a problem and much safer than trying to park in one of the very narrow streets. No rear garden but you can eat / drink al fresco at the front of the property where the street is quiet anyway.
Cottage in ideal location for beach, local eateries.
Pretty cottage, clean & spacious inside. Furniture is a little dated & understand when it is a holiday let you don’t want to furnish it with expensive items but was a bit of a mishmash. Would recommend The Clipper (gd service, friendly staff) & The Strand Cafe (ditto as The Clipper but their milkshakes to die for) with their outside terraces. The Ferry Boat only offers BBQ food at weekends & nothing during the week & gets busy with people who go along to listen to live music they put on at weekends. Shaldon ferry to Teignmouth is great - the 2 fella’s who operate it are characters. Shaldon nice little place & ideal for a relaxing holiday sitting on beach reading a book & watching the boats & yachts coming & going.

We had a lovely week in this beautiful grade 2 listed property.
It is in the heart of the village, a stone’s throw from the beach and a flat walk to the village green, local shops and pubs. Only things to consider are that the stairs are very steep and a couple of the door frames are very low. This is a gem of a house in this lovely village. Highly recommend.

Fine for a few days.
This is a charming cottage, with an honest and accurate listing, not pretending to be more than basic. It's not overly refurbished and blessedly free of seaside tat. Important things are good and work well: comfortable beds, good bath & shower, heating, wifi, TV. But beyond the basics, the cottage was not comfortable enough for a stay longer than a few days. Hooks on backs of doors are not the best place to hang towels, a few more lamps would be helpful for reading, a few decent hangers would be good, and a small carton of milk in the fridge would have been very welcome. Although we received a friendly and helpful email ahead of our stay from the cottage owners, we did not meet them while we were there.
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We did come down several times once we returned to the village, but did not find you in. Hopefully you were enjoying yourselves elsewhere. Very pleased that you found everything working well, with comfortable beds etc. The reason we don't leave milk or provisions any more is that so many of our guests don't drink cows milk, or indeed any kind of milk and told us that the gesture was kind, but not needed. We would suggest that the towel rail is the place for towels, though of course guests can use door hooks as well. We'll check the clothes hangers as we have always provided plenty of them, so this is rather a mystery. Teign Cottage is over 400 years old and we have furnished it in a style that we think is both comfortable and in keeping with its age. Best wishes Lesley and Jim

We have stayed at lots of holiday cottages in Shaldon over the last 25 years and have always wanted to stay at Teign Cottage; were not disappointed.
Cosy, quaint and full of character, this is the perfect place to stay; warm and inviting in winter and less than 100 steps from the beach ( and The Ferry Boat Inn), so would be just the job for a summer holiday too. Loved the cottage and hope to return shortly.

This was our second visit to the beautiful, quaint Teign Cottage - and certainly not our last!
We can’t rate it highly enough!. Lesley & Jim couldn't be more welcoming & accommodating hosts & it was lovely to catch up with them (despite our dog covering them in white hair!). The cottage itself is in the centre of Shaldon & contains everything you need. The beach, walks, pubs, cafes & shops are on the doorstep & everywhere allows dogs!, but check the beach information for when dogs are allowed on the beaches as this changes depending on the season. We stayed out of season so parking was easy, during peak times it’s easy to buy a long stay ticket for the car parks which are a short walk away. Thank you Lesley & Jim for another relaxing break, we can’t wait to come back.

A truly quaint cottage with a superb location in Shaldon.
Lesley and Jim turned out on a very wet afternoon to welcome us in. Super hosts, sorting a problem for us very quickly. We had great week, even though storm Ciaran visited as well! Just mind your heads if you’re over 5’6”!!!

We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage.
The location is ideal right in the middle of the village and near to all. Only problem we found was it appears that there were mould on the inside door of the wardrobe in the main bedroom, so we didn't like to hang any clothes in there. This didn't spoil our holiday, as we just used the wardrobe in the other bedroom.

We have just returned from 6 nights at Teign Cottage and we loved every minute of our stay!
The cottage was everything we expected & more. The location was perfect, just off the main road & so nice and peaceful, a view of the beach/sea from our front patio area, and an ideal position for exploring the local area. The pub close by was also handy! We paid £30 for a weeks parking pass at one of the local larger car parks, but managed to find parking even closer on the sea front, which was free. It can't be guaranteed and so paying for a pass is a good back-up plan. The inside of the cottage was spacious, homely and just what we wanted for our stay. We couldn't fault it. Myself, wife, 8 year old daughter and dog thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and owners Lesley & Jim were always on hand to help if we had any questions. We look forward to returning to Teign Cottage again one day soon!

This is a beautiful, well kept and well equipped cottage.
The description of the property is accurate and it is spacious and comfortable. The heating system is very efficient. Shaldon is a wonderful, relaxing location with good amenities, shop, takeaway and pubs. The walks in the area are quite breathtaking and very nearby. All in all, this is a great holiday destination and a wonderful cottage.

We have just got home from having a wonderful stay at Teign Cottage.
Lesley & Jim couldn’t have been more welcoming & the property is just beautiful - cosy & filled with character. The beach is less than a minute away, shops, pubs & cafes around the corner. Our stay was off season so there was plenty of free parking -during peak times there are car parks within walking distance. We can’t wait to book again!

The cottage is very quaint and characterful, in an excellent location; the unspoilt village has very good facilities within a short walking distance, and plenty of interesting places to visit within a short drive.
As it was outside the season, we were lucky and always able to find a free parking place close by, (though this wouldn't be the case Apr - Sept.). I would emphasise that the stairs are very steep, uneven and narrow and difficult for the elderly, infirm, or very young children, but appreciate this quirkiness is part of the charm of such an old cottage, likewise the ability to be able to fit in only a tiny fridge. The owners were very helpful and friendly, and we enjoyed our stay.
We do state in the listing that there is a steep and winding flight of stairs which we do feel is sufficient. We would always advise if you are worried about these sorts of things to ring us ahead of booking! - Helpful Holidays.
We are just on our way home after spending a week in this beautiful cottage.
The cottage was immaculately clean and located in a stunning village with plenty of amenities only a very short walk away. The beach is literally across the road with quick access to the foot ferry to Teignmouth. The owners are absolutely lovely and couldn’t help enough with ensuring we were settled in. So pleased to have found this absolute gem of a place and will definitely return (hopefully many times!).

Excellent little cottage.
Big enough for 4 people whilst still maintaining the historic and cosy feel of the property. The owners were fantastic and always on hand if you had any questions. This is a proper hidden gem, the village has everything you need and all in close proximity We will be booking again.

The property provided everything we expected.
A little small in places but that cannot be changed due to the age of the property. Excellent shower.....and the lack of cupboard space for food is a tiny issue. All in all we had a good stay.
This is a lovely character cottage in a superb location.
We where met and supported by the owners who made us feel very welcome. The stairs are steep and narrow so difficult for a suitcase, but there is plenty of room downstairs so no real issues. Shaldon is a lovely place with a ferry to Teignmouth and onwards. We had a really pleasant stay and would highly recommend the cottage as a perfect location to stay and explore this area.

Teign cottage is an enchanting, ancient, thatched cottage.
The facilities are excellent & attractive. We especially loved the kitchen. You actually enjoy a view of the river from the cottage & we had the pleasure of seeing the most magical, salmon pink sunrise, during our stay. Most of all, we were able to relax & enjoy all that Shaldon has to offer! Chris

Charming cottage.
..v comfortable -wonderful downstairs accomodation...extremely good location. The staircase. Caution is required for any age group managing the stairs -the door opening onto them makes it tricky..but once up there its quirky with its sloping floors. The bedroom is a delightful surprise..roomy and comfy. Shaldon is a very pretty place to visit and especially entertaining during jubilee week

We have just had a wonderful week away at the most beautiful cosy, cute, gorgeous Teigh Cottage.
When we arrived at the cottage it absolutely spotless clean from the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms to the bed linen. Also as it was February & very chilly the cottage was absolutely so cosy & lovely and warm, considering we were there for storm Dudley & Eurnie we felt safe at Teigh Cotrage. Lesley & her husband where such lovely hosts sent me an email before hand to explain exactly how to find the cottage, what lovely places there are to eat what local are shops there are, where you can park which was just brilliant, thank you Lesley. I will most definitely be booking again to stay at Teigh Cottage it was like home from home with all your home comfort's. And Shaldon itself is just the most beautiful village and a definite must to visit. Thank you Lesley for a wonderful stay at your beautiful cottage xx

It's a lovely quiet chocolate box cottage, in the heart of a lovely little village.
We really enjoyed our break and Tangle the dog loved being so close to the beach, It's only a short ferry ride over to the main town of Teignmouth where you have all the shops. Lesley & Jim the owners where lovely. We would definitely stay again.

We found Teign cottage to be a first class holiday rental property.
It is extremely well equipped with every kitchen item that could be needed. The cooker is first class and heats up rapidly. The lounge is very comfortable and has a great TV. The main bedroom is huge and has a very comfortable bed and also has a TV. There is a second bedroom with twin beds which looks nice too. We were there in late November so the heating system kept us nice and warm. Location of the property is excellent and we could see the estuary from the windows. Its a very short distance from the beach so our Border Collie loved it and she even had an extra evening walk on the beach and crisps in the real ale pub a few yards away. There is also an excellent restaurant, The Clipper, a few yards away. Even in the off season I would recommend booking a table. The owners are very hospitable and even met us to hand over the keys although here is a key safe provided. Communications were great both by email and phone. I managed to leave my dressing gown behind and the owner called to say they will send it on. We really enjoyed our break and would like to return eventually.

Picturesque cottage in central location.
Very well renovated, clean and comfortable. Lovely sun trap in the front garden. Parking was easy in the large car park at The Ness with a weekly ticket bought through Teignbridge Council website, an easy 10-15 minute walk along the shore. We only needed to drive through the narrow streets of the village to load and unload at beginning and end. We found the fridge to be on the small side so couldn't do a big shop for food for the week. However, there are plenty of local places to eat out or buy food on a daily basis (a butcher, baker, grocery store) so it wasn't an issue.

The furniture was very tired in this beautiful cottage and the lounge had a smell which suggested animals had been on the loose covers.
The inside was not a patch on the outside. The furniture,with the exception of the kitchen,looked like it was from a charity shop. The bathrooms were nice. It met expectations because the outside was gorgeous but the inside needed sorting to the same standard. Those loose covers were fit for nothing but the bin. The ship was spoilt for ha’peth of tar.
Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback. We have worked hard to make the cottage a characterful and pleasant place to stay. Our sofas were actually made for the cottage living room, they are plump and comfortable and normally have throws as well. We thought long and hard about what extra protection we could give our guests during this pandemic, and concluded that it would give an extra layer of safety for our guests if we covered our furniture with washable covers and these are brand new. Thus, it's much easier to sanitise our cottage between guests - we feel very happy with this solution and hope our guests appreciate this extra care and understand the reasons for it.
The location and character of this very old thatched cottage is wonderful.
The village is both beautiful and excellently served with good pubs, local shops and cafes. One drawback is parking. The nearest car park is about 10 minutes away and up a fairly steep hill. £3.80 per day. The less fit or able need to take this into consideration before choosing this lovely cottage. Otherwise this is a lovely base for a quiet relaxing holiday.
Teign cottage in shaldon is a beautiful little 300 year old thatched cottage, the cottage is situated in the heart of the village and within easy walking distance to a number of eating establishments and pubs together with a few shops, We visited a number of towns including going into Cornwall and visiting looe and polperro, we also went on a lovely trip on the dart valley steam train into Dartmouth and then on a boat trip up the river dart.
We will definitely Be booking this beautiful cottage and Visiting the lovely Shaldon again.
We had an amazing stay in Shaldon.
The cottage was adorable and loved by us all. It was spacious, comfy and only about 30 seconds to the beach. We would definitely come back and stay here again xx
