“The cottage is set in a pretty garden with fabulous views.”

The upstairs living room is well set out. The kitchen area has plenty of cutlery, crockery and pans. The fridge is a standard under the counter size with a small freezer box. The only thing missing appears to be a serated bread knife, the delicious local sourdough bread was a bit of a challenge to cut with the knives available. And the salt grinder was empty. The back right hand hob control is a little loose and the temperature is therefore a bit vague. There are no instructions for the oven ...

There are no instructions for the oven which took a bit of trail and error before I got it working correctly. The two bedrooms are small but adequate. The bedding is of high quality, the duvets are lovely and warm. The shower is excellent and towels soft. The whole cottage has been furnished to a high standard with comfortable sofa, chairs and beds. The driveway is shared by two other properties. It is a bit awkward to drive into the parking space so may take a couple of manoeuvres. Exiting the property in either direction must be taken with care as there is a wall which restricts the road view slightly. I had looked at google maps before our visit and found excellent road views from Strete of the siting of the cottage. We took the road from Halwell direct to Dartmouth and then down the A379 to Strete, which we found to be a slightly better route for us, with a few single track squeeze points, even though it was longer than the directions given. There was only one thing we found not pleasant about the cottage. The were several reed scent diffusers in the cottage which were quite strong scented. These we had to put away in a cupboard as they made us cough. However, the smell of cold damp was obvious in the single bedroom without the diffuser. So we put one in the bedroom in the day when we were out, and removed it on our return. I appreciate that this is an old stone property and everything has been done to make the cottage as warm and comfortable as possible, but a previous reviewer had also mentioned the damp smell. This might be because in the colder months windows are not opened and the cottage is shaded by large trees.I would still recommend the cottage as it is a lovely property but maybe better in the warmer weather next time.

The property

½ mile from the centre of Strete, set above the A379 between Slapton and Dartmouth and with spectacular sea views along the coast between them, a stunning, Grade II listed, upside down coach house.

Dating from 1832, it has been beautifully refurbished.

Terrific views too from the private, good-sized, enclosed garden with lawn and patio (table/chairs).

Inside, elegant and relaxed with natural linens and gentle hues.

Front door to stairs up to open-plan living/dining/kitchen with woodburner, Smart TV and views to Start Point in one direction and the mouth of the Dart estuary in the other.

Beautiful kitchen area (slimline dishwasher, microwave, fridge with small freezer compartment, electric cooker).

Downstairs, two bedrooms - a pretty double, and a single.

Bathroom (bath, separate shower, washbasin, underfloor heating).

Ground floor cloakroom with loo, basin and utility area with washing machine.

Due to the age and character of the property please note that the staircase is quite narrow with a curve at the top leading into the sitting room.

A fabulous, romantic coastal spot at any time of year.

Strete: cliff-top village (pub, PO/shop) ½ mile walk along a well-used road to the shingle beach (pay and display car parking also available at the beach).

Coast Path walk to secret cove (¾ mile).

Blackpool Sands (coarse sand, The Venus Café, Restaurant, Takeaway and Watersports), 1½ miles, and, a mile away, the magnificent crescent of Slapton Sands and Slapton Ley nature reserve (birdwatching, walks).

Dartmouth (restaurants, cinema, river trips, steam railway), 5 miles'.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.

About the location

STRETE

Dartmouth 4.8 miles

Strete is a village looking over Start Bay just south of Dartmouth. The hills and countryside that encircle the village to the west converge on the memorable coastline forming one of the most visually striking images in the South Hams. There is a post office and general store in the village along with a lovely church plus the well renowned Laughing Monk restaurant. There is a small community area where you can picnic and walk your dog with its wildlife section and notable views of Start Bay. A few short miles in either direction brings you to the magical crescent shaped family beach at Blackpool Sands and the three mile stretch of Slapton Sands. Dartmouth lies on the banks of the beautiful River Dart estuary in the popular and picturesque South Hams area of South Devon. Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the coast, Dartmouth is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Devon.
