“We had a lovely stay over the long Easter weekend.”

The home was very well equipped, making a great first impression on the kids, as did the unexpected welcome pack including an Easter activity and biscuits for the dog. They loved having their own ensuites in the rooms upstairs and we enjoyed the privacy of the downstairs bedroom with its own wetroom in the room next door. Our dog Comet was very happy and settled in well, with the wooden and tiled floors making it very easy to keep clean after walks. It felt very private, with the hosts available when needed and unobtrusive when not - the perfect balance. There was no noise from others or outside. Noise does travel within the Barley home itself, but this was welcome as it made it easy for us to listen out for the kids upstairs. A very good find and one I'm sure we'll return to, especially as there is room in the other homes for other relatives when they come to visit too.

The property

In the heart of Talaton is striking Grade II listed Talaton House, a former rectory, renovated from its 18th cent.

origins and surrounded by acres of beautiful parkland and specimen trees.

Beside the house, the original stables, groom’s cottage and hayloft have been finely converted with flair into four excellent cottages, all exceptionally well done with smart design, stylish furnishings, oak/tiled floors and sleek kitchens.

A sweeping drive (shared with the friendly owners’ main house) leads to the cottages.

They all look over scenic parkland alongside the main house and you are welcome to wander the vast lower lawns (picnic benches, barbecue area, dogs on leads welcome) and peaceful circular woodland walk.

Groom’s Cottage, Gardener’s Cottage and Barley House each have a gravelled terrace (table/seating) at the front, made private with attractive planting and pleached trees.

Loading/unloading outside the cottages; shared parking area, just beyond (10 to 30 yards).

An outstanding location; much thought has gone into making these superb places individual, stylish and comfortable.Barley House sits end-of-row with wide, gently sloping paved path/ramp alongside the gravelled terrace (bench, tables/chairs) to front door.

Light-filled open-plan living/dining/kitchen (dishwasher, washer-drier, microwave, fridge-freezer, electric oven/induction hob) with smart TV/DVD/Blu-ray, wireless speaker and big glazed doors to front terrace.

Ground-floor double bedroom (5' bed) and wheel-in shower-room (wet-room suite, overhead and hand shower attachments, grab rails).

Upstairs, two further bedrooms, both with apex beams - a double (zip-linked 6' bed or twin) with en suite bathroom (suite, shower over three-quarter size bath), and a twin (zip-linkable to 6' double) with en suite shower-room (wet-room suite); upstairs en suites are behind partition walls without ceilings.

Smart and comfortable, particularly convenient for those with limited mobility. Talaton: small village (PO/shop, pub, church) in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Good road/rail links (Feniton, 2 miles; Tiverton, 13).

Honiton, 5 miles; ‘Jurrassic Coast’ at Sidmouth, 9; excellent sandy beach at Exmouth, 12.
