Description
Just 20 yards from Bigbury-on-Sea's big and splendid sandy beach, looking to Burgh Island Causeway, are 29 stunning, high quality apartments, of which we let a number. Within the same building are excellent leisure facilities and a restaurant. The views over the sea to the south and west, and at low tide of a vast expanse of smooth washed yellow sand reaching to Burgh Island, are outstanding. The island's jolly pub, The Pilchard, is fun to visit (long-legged sea tractor at high tide).
All the apartments, which are privately owned and individually furnished, have those sensational views, and are wonderfully light, with large, airy open-plan living/dining/kitchens and glazed doors to balconies or terraces. The smallish bedrooms, at the back (without views), have good quality en suite bath or shower-rooms.
The apartment building is three-storey. Most apartments have easy access (short walk from parking and between 5 and 9 steps down to the lift). The ground floor (still high above the beach) apartments have big terraces, the first and top floor apartments have very good-sized balconies. The leisure facilities, which are free for guests to use and open from 10am every day (except Christmas Day), include a fine indoor swimming pool (40' x 20' x 4'6"), spa pool, well-equipped gym (treadmill, steps, cycles, Concept II Rower and other instruments of torture) and sauna (no children under 14 in gym or sauna). There are changing rooms, a shower and disabled loo.
The Club restaurant/smart bar, is open 10am to 9pm during the High Season, reservations recommended (for all other times of the year, please contact the Leisure Centre for opening times), serves excellent food throughout the day, with a popular dinner menu which varies daily and themed evenings. You can also order meals to take to your apartment. The comfy lounging area has sofas and WiFi, and the sunny outdoor terrace faces the sea.
No 6 Ground floor: big terrace (flowering shrubs, teak furniture); stunning views south and west. Tile-floored open-plan living/dining/kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, electric cooker): comfy sofas, long dining table seating 6, TV/DVD, sliding glazed doors to terrace. Two bedrooms - double (6' bed or twin) with en suite bathroom (suite, shower over bath), and twin with en suite shower-room (suite). Washer-drier in hall cupboard. Bigbury-on-Sea: village (seasonal café) with south Devon's biggest sandy beaches (The Venus Café, Takeaway and Surf School, seasonal beach shop), stretching to Burgh Island (The Pilchard pub; famous art deco hotel - you can walk to it at low tide, go by long-legged tractor at high; setting of Agatha Christie novels). Good windsurfing; fine cliffs for walking and sea-bird watching. Golf, 1 mile.Nearest shop, 3 miles.Kingsbridge, 10 miles; Salcombe, 15 miles. Arrival time 4pm.

What guests are saying
We love this apartment in this beautiful place so much that we have stayed here often - in fact 3 times this year over 4 weeks!
And plan to next year too. Being hyper-critical, the kitchen area is probably a little bit tired, but that didn’t worry us. Its biggest charm for us is the view, the fact that we can bring our dog, and that it’s home from home, with books, videos, games, etc and we find it very comfortable. We also enjoyed the swimming pool and coffees from the cafe. We love it!! The owner is wonderful - even though the letting is through Helpful Holidays, she is interested in us and concerned that we should have a lovely time. She is charming and caring.
A lovely apartment.
Everything we needed but the sofas are really uncomfortable.
The guests who had booked for the week after us appeared at the front door with their toddlers two days early leading to confusion and stress.
Perhaps messaging to them had not clarified the start date as Friday 14th August? Cleaners who came half way though were friendly and charming. The balcony views are spectacular.
