“Chapel Cottage is a lovely house in a peaceful setting.”

The cottage is nicely decorated, it has a lovely homely feel and we very much enjoyed staying here. It is very well equipped and we found the beds and sofas to be comfortable. Our group was two families and the size was perfect. The garden is lovely with lots of birds and there are 2 good sized parking spaces. In terms of the surrounding area there is a nearby pub. Also the delightful Welcombe Pottery selling local ceramics where we took a very enjoyable beginners class suitable for 12 years ...

Our group was two families and the size was perfect. The garden is lovely with lots of birds and there are 2 good sized parking spaces. In terms of the surrounding area there is a nearby pub. Also the delightful Welcombe Pottery selling local ceramics where we took a very enjoyable beginners class suitable for 12 years +. Welcombe Mouth beach is a wild beach and the approach is along a steep lane which some cars might find difficult and I think the walk from the cottage would be too far for children. There are however beautiful beaches that have RNLI lifeguards a very short drive away such as Bude, Sandymouth and Widemouth which are perfect for exploring by all ages but especially good for making sandcastles and looking at rock pools. The Rectory Farm Tearooms at Morwenstow also has delicious cream teas. The coastline is wild and beautiful and we would definitely return to Chapel Cottage and the area.

The property

1½ miles up from Welcombe Mouth, a prettily furnished cottage attached to an old chapel in the tiny epicentre of Welcombe village, 100 yards from the ancient thatched pub.

For the reasonably fit, the cove is a pleasant valley walk downhill (parking by the beach).

Access through small, neat, enclosed garden (bench) and down 4 steps (no handrail) to open porch.

Hall for coats/boots.

Big farmhouse-style kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, fridge, electric cooker) with beams and Rayburn (for central heating only), and utility room with washing machine, tumble drier and fridge-freezer.

Living room with TV/DVD, laminate floor and woodburner.

From hall, stairs (stairgate) up to four bedrooms (beds with footboards) - two double, and two twin; bathroom (suite, shower over bath) and shower-room (suite).

A warm, cosy cottage within easy reach of an excellent pub. Welcombe Mouth: cove (rocks and sand at low tide, great surfing) between spectacular cliffs in one of the most unspoilt parts of the West Country, and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Coast Path, great birdwatching.

Welcombe hamlet (good food pub, pottery), 1 mile; community shop, 4 miles.

Hartland (large village with shops and pubs), 10 miles; Bude, 12.

About the location

WELCOMBE

Bude 12 miles; Bideford 14 miles.

A pretty country village just one mile from the high cliffs, rocky coves and golden sands of the north Devon/Cornwall coast, as well as the beach at Welcombe Mouth with its sand, rocks, and some fabulous waves to ride. West, along the coast, are excellent beaches at Widemouth Bay, Sandymouth and Bude. To the north the coast path winds its way toward Hartland Point Lighthouse and on to Clovelly (8 miles) with its steep cobbled streets leading down to the harbour and pub below. No cars allowed here but you can hire a donkey for the ride! In the nearby area are several farm and theme parks, golf courses and outstanding gardens whilst the amenities of Bude are a mere 12 miles away. Everything for an enjoyable holiday.
