“Whitcombe cottage is a gem of a place!”

Quietly located on the owner's farm, it is nevertheless not far from a main A road giving easy access to all that East Devon has to offer. The cottage is a converted farm building, one of three sharing the farm yard with the main farmhouse. The buildings are beautiful, solidly constructed from the local stone and there is tarmaced parking for several cars. Inside, the ground floor provides an attractive, open plan, living space with a wood burner to supplement the radiators (we lit it once, just for the fun of it). There is the added benefit of a ground floor, accessible, floor wet room. Stairs (with a stairlift) give access to two sizeable bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor. The bedrooms have attractive vaulted ceilings with exposed roof trusses. The furnishings are of a high quality and the eco brand cleaning products and toilet tissue are a nice touch. Jayne, the host, had also left us a home baked cake and some roses from the garden. It is possible to arrange to see the rare breed sheep and cows, kept on the farm, and there is a lovely walk uphill over the fields to the rear to Dumpdon iron age hill fort, for some lovely views of the surrounding countryside. All in all, we had a great week with our son and two dogs, and intend to return next year with our daughter.

About the location

HONITON

Ottery St Mary 5.6 miles; Lyme Regis 14.2 miles; Exeter 16.7 miles.

Honiton is a delightful market town in East Devon, with plenty to offer visitors. It lies in the valley of the River Otter and is surrounded by rolling Devon hills, green wooded valleys and plenty of scattered farming villages. Honiton has an attractive High Street stretching almost 2 miles, and lined with individually owned shops, pubs and restaurants. Honiton has been famous for lacemaking since the reign of Elizabeth I and still has a few lacemakers in work today - visitors can see some fine examples of antique lace in the town’s Allhallows Museum. Honiton boasts the only public art gallery in East Devon; the Thelma Hulbert Gallery occupies an attractive Grade I listed Victorian house, and has links with the Hayward Gallery, London. Honiton is only a short drive from the dramatic 20 mile stretch of Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site. Resorts such as Seaton, Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth are found along this stretch of coastline, and all have much to occupy the visitor. Near to Honiton is the cathedral city of Exeter with plenty of large shops, a wealth of museums, a theatre and fabulous restaurants.
