“We had an absolutely fantastic stay at The Shippon.”

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a warm welcome from the lovely owners, who went above and beyond to make us feel at home. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a warm welcome from the lovely owners, who went above and beyond to make us feel at home. After a long drive, we appreciated a nice cuppa with the gifts of fresh milk and delicious homemade cakes, such a thoughtful touch! As were the eggs from the resident chickens, which we enjoyed for breakfast. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean and beautifully maintained, with everything you could possibly need provided. The kitchen was superbly well-equipped with modern appliances, including a coffee machine, dishwasher, and even a washer-dryer. They even thought of little details like plastic glasses and fizz flutes for enjoying drinks in the hot tub! Speaking of the hot tub, the views from there were breathtaking, and stargazing each evening was magical. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and we had some of the best nights' sleep during our stay. While we didn’t use the log burner, all the supplies were there, ready to go if we had wanted a cozy fire. All in all, The Shippon was the perfect getaway. Its an ideal base for explring Devon. We honestly didn’t want to leave! We can’t recommend it enough. Thank you to the wonderful owners for creating such a special place!

About the location

HONITON

Ottery St Mary 5.6 miles; Lyme Regis 14.2 miles; Exeter 16.7 miles.

Honiton is a delightful market town in East Devon, with plenty to offer visitors. It lies in the valley of the River Otter and is surrounded by rolling Devon hills, green wooded valleys and plenty of scattered farming villages. Honiton has an attractive High Street stretching almost 2 miles, and lined with individually owned shops, pubs and restaurants. Honiton has been famous for lacemaking since the reign of Elizabeth I and still has a few lacemakers in work today - visitors can see some fine examples of antique lace in the town’s Allhallows Museum. Honiton boasts the only public art gallery in East Devon; the Thelma Hulbert Gallery occupies an attractive Grade I listed Victorian house, and has links with the Hayward Gallery, London. Honiton is only a short drive from the dramatic 20 mile stretch of Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site. Resorts such as Seaton, Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth are found along this stretch of coastline, and all have much to occupy the visitor. Near to Honiton is the cathedral city of Exeter with plenty of large shops, a wealth of museums, a theatre and fabulous restaurants.

Blackdown Cottage Escapes at Lower Lye is an historic Grade 2* listed medieval hall house, this property is based on the farmstead on the grounds. The holiday cottages & curtilage are therefore listed by association. The site, because of its age & heritage has many uneven, non-level surfaces. Much of the outside amenity space & paths are cobbled. There is also open water & several streams. Whilst these features add to the character & charm here & we do not wish to exclude children or those less stable on their feet, it might well be that we are not best suited to their requirements.

This property offers the following short breaks:
