  • “I've stayed at Dozmary Pool Barn a number of times.”

This is the first time since it was refurbished. Thankfully the character remains unaffected, and there are a number of things improved. It's still my favourite place to be in Cornwall.

The property

Right on the banks of Dozmary Pool, a detached lakeside house with far-reaching views across the lake and beyond.

Converted from a stone barn, now thoroughly modernised and surrounded by a walled garden, offering fantastic peace and tranquillity (only one other residence near).

This is a glorious waterside place for wild swimming, informal fishing, fun with your boat and all sorts of outdoor larks.

The occasional horse rider or walker may pass, but here are mostly the sounds of nature (skylarks, water fowl, buzzards) and stunning night skies.

Four hundred yards of tarmac drive to large car/boat parking area.

Glazed doors into open-plan living/dining/kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, electric cooker) with granite worktops, slate floor, WIFI, TV/DVD and woodburner.

Ground-floor double bedroom (5' bed, limited clothes-hanging space) with lake views and en suite shower-room (suite).

Stairs up to two twin bedrooms, one with door to terrace (table/chairs) and both with a view of the lake; bathroom (suite, shower over bath).

Washing machine and tumble drier in laundry/utility room.

Arrival after 4.30pm.

For fabulous Swallows and Amazons adventures, or simply soaking up the peace and silence, this is the place to be. Dozmary Pool: lake on Bodmin Moor steeped in legend of King Arthur and Excalibur, now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, good for paddling, fishing, kayaking, walking and wildlife watching.

Jamaica Inn, made famous by du Maurier's tale of smugglers, at Bolventor, 1¼ miles; St Neot (pub, church), 5; Bodmin (town), 12.

The sea at Trebarwith Strand, 20 miles.
