What is a Shepherds Hut?

Shepherds Huts date back to around the 16th century and were used, unsurprisingly, by shepherds. They were designed to provide practical and durable accommodation while you were keeping close to your flock.

The shepherd hut is a kitchen, dining area, bedroom, and sitting room all in one, with a stove in the corner and windows on both sides so the shepherd could see the flock. A stable door facing away from the wind meant the shepherd could hear the sheep, and strong cast iron wheels allowed the hut to move from field to field.

With the advent of mechanised farm machinery and electricity, the use of shepherds huts dwindled. But they are making a resurgence more recently as holiday homes!
