  • “Woodedge Cottage is a quaint cottage in an idyllic setting.”

The village of Porlock and surrounding area is lovely, with many walks both on the coast and Exmoor. There are many interesting places to visit. Although Woodedge Cottage was well equipped, cozy and comfortable it could do with a little TLC by the owner. It was disappointing to read in the visitors book that many of the issues had been unattended to for months; namely the broken toilet seat, loose tile at the bottom of the stair, wobbly table, untidy garden. We could not find the charger for the hoover and were unable to hoover on our departure. If the cottage was tidied up it would be a perfect location for a couple to holiday in Porlock.

The property

In the beautiful, peaceful wooded valley of Hawkcombe, ½ mile from the centre of Porlock, a neat mid-terrace cottage, tenderly refurbished.

To the front, a small enclosed garden (picnic bench) reached via a footbridge and 3 steps over a small babbling stream.

Small step up to stable doors into open-plan living/dining/kitchen (microwave, fridge, electric oven/induction hob) with small woodburner, TV/DVD and folding table/chairs for dining.

Narrow wrought iron spiral stairs up to two bedrooms - a double, and a single (footboard; limited clothes-hanging space).

Bathroom (suite, shower over bath).

A wonderful bijou bolt hole for walkers or anyone looking to explore this beautiful part of Exmoor. Porlock: large village (shops, restaurants, pubs) between Exmoor and the sea, at the foot of the marvellous Vale of Porlock.

The sea (pebble beach) is a mile away across fields or, by car, 2 at Porlock Weir (harbour, pub, pebble beach); sand at Minehead (small resort, good golf, Butlins), 6 miles.

Cookery school/restaurant, 4½ miles.

Excellent base for Exmoor, popular with riders (stables).

About the location

PORLOCK

Minehead 5.5 miles; Lynton 11 miles.

Porlock is a quaint village, popular with tourists due its character, proximity to the lovely North Somerset coastline and situation within the Exmoor National Park. There are plenty of little gift shops along with pubs, cafes and restaurants to be found and only two miles away, the picturesque harbour of Porlock Weir offers wonderful views across the Bristol Channel. The Porlock Hill takes travelers up a steep, winding road out of the village to the Exmoor Hills, where walkers, horse riders and cyclists will love the open space, where ponies and red deer roam the moors. In 2011, Exmoor was designated as Europe’s first International Dark Skies Reserve, and so this is an excellent base for a romantic evening spent gazing at the stars, where a clear night unveils an abundance of interesting constellations to the naked eye. Porlock offers the choice of sea fishing from the weir, and the reservoirs and rivers of Exmoor are only a short, scenic drive away. Golfers can stay in Porlock and enjoy one of the several courses on the edges of Exmoor, with the nearest only seven miles away. The medieval village of Dunster, where the castle dominates the skyline, makes a great day out, or take a ride on the West Somerset steam train along the coast to the little harbour village of Watchet. A fabulous village location with lots of outdoor pursuits to interest every visitor.
